The Lyrics

During WW2 General Motors Lamp Light Division made 100,000 crude Liberator pistols with comic panel instructions for resistance members in occupied Europe. They were a failure. However, postwar the US analyzed captured German weapons with stamped steel and decided to make a new Liberator II pistol based on the Colt M1911A using this low tech. Almost all of the gun was stamped except for the barrel, pins, rear slide block, and a few other minor parts. The resulting gun was too heavy at 51 oz vs 39 oz for standard M1911A and only had 7 rounds vs postwar British stamped Sten SMGs. Only 20 were made and one is in the Springfield Museum with the Liberator I. No markings, but the designation was GLD M1911L2...
The Liberator II
Not refined

Stamped steel was really crude
But faster rate
And lighter weight

German tech- analyzed it
.45ACP, 7 rounds
Metal surface parkerized
But the gun weighed over 3 lbs!!!
(Must have been a bear to carry 'round)

The Liberator II
Was not refined,
Nor streamlined

Not improved
Hard to shoot
Gun was crude
Less than 20 were made
GM GLD spared
Calamity
'47 design did fade
( was done away)

No production spree
The Liberator II
Was not refined
(Steel stamping used on SMGs)

Seems no one ever had a problem turning out huge numbers of very sophisticated guns. Not much use for a military issue "Saturday Night Special". I think most of the Liberator first models were held i warehouses until after the war, then dumped in the ocean. Only person ever killed by one was a worker in the factory in Indiana, who shot himself by accident. The government was hoping that those dropped in the Philippines and China would quickly rust in the humid climate and not lay around to become part of a social problem after the war.
