The Lyrics

An obscure tank design from Russia in WW1 was the Mendeleev Rybinsk tank designed by a shipyard worker in his spare time. It was radical for 1915 with a huge rectangular hull and small MG turret about three quarters down up top. It would mount a 120mm naval gun in the front and be protected by 100-150mm of armor all around. Crew of 8, 256 hp petrol engine, and uniques gas piston suspension system to raise or lower the tank. Was proposed, but rejected in favor of another Russian oddball- the Vezdekhod "Go Anywhere" streamlined tank (prototypes only).
Mendeleev tank- bold move
For the time

Shipyard worker planned it
173 tons
120mm gun (Canet)

Gas suspension just incredible
Heavy armor box hull proud
Petrol engine, 256 HP
Bulky monster would be loud
(24 Kph on the ground)

Mendeleev tank- bold move
In wartime
For the line

8 crew
Turret too
Up-down moves
Iron Giant to fight Germans
Was prepared
In secrecy
'Cause tanks were urgent

Rejected, no need
Mendeleev tank- bold move
For wartime
(Russians just weren't up to speed)

This tank looks something like a railroad boxcar. I would imagine Russia in those days didn't have many roads such a machine could traverse. The Vezdekhod is even stranger looking, sort of like Father Juliano's Aurora car from the 1950's.

The Tsar Tank probably the oddest of all Russian designs...

Patrick, the Mendeleev is a purely rectangular version of the latter French St. Chamond. Look that up...
And then there's this thing - May 09, 2015 - Report this comment

New Russian T-14 seen in victory parade recently. 48 tons, 50 mph on 1500 HP engine. 125 mm main gun plus 30mm AA and 12.7mm aux MG up top. Has ability to fire AT and AA wire guided missiles through the gun tube. Has electronic and active anti-helo and AA systems, new armor and 3 man crew safe in armored capsule in front hull. Turret is remote operated and can be placed in auto mode. New armor is flex type unaffected by extreme cold temps. Production started with output projected at 500-600 per year for next 5 years.
