Yesterday, I saw Spike Jonz's "Her" and was profoundly disappointed by the "experience film." Like "Gravity" this is a film in which one experiences what the character feels intensely, but unlike "Gravity" the ending is crap. Basically, Theo works in the near future with a dot.com that takes peoples' lives and writes "Happy Cards" for them. Theo is a great writer filled with love and caring at his job... but who is getting divorced offline. He has no life and is in denial until he decides to purchase a new AI (Artificial Intelligence or Intuitive) OS chosen personally for him by answering a few short questions. His OS becomes Sam(antha) who quickly turns his life around and becomes this bodiless entity that is available 24/7. So far, so good. Then steadily Theo learns that Sam takes liberties going through his files and making some decisons for him. Sam gets jealous of his soon to be ex-wife who has a body and focases on a comment Theo made about Sam not knowing what true loss is. They try AIOS surrogate sex through another girl but it fails and then Sam seems to just disappear one day leaving Theo bewildered. It then becomes apparent that Sam has been talking to other OS entities, male and female. She has over 8000 other OS friends and over 600 other lovers! Theo is devastated and breaks off communication for a while until Sam tells him that she's leaving him with the other OS entities. So in the end the guy is back to being alone, divorced, and struggling emotionally. I think this was far from a "love story" and is cruel. Some will say that Sam forces Theo to get back into the real world with real women since at the end he hooks up with a neighbor divorcee who lost her husband. But nothing is final. They both sit on top of a roof railing and stare at the night sky... so WTF??? The visuals are subtle and yet amazing with tech not dominating everything but reworked into a future LA landscape where people are well dressed, non-violent, courteous, kind. The architecture is awesome and everything seems sanitized in the future. The whole AIOS thing was fun at first but the director leaves us experiencing more of Theo's pain and frustrations than any happiness or joy. His obsession and sex with Sam verbally leaves us feeling a bit filthy as in live phone sex and the surrogate attempt is disturbing. In the end, the viewer doesn't get any magical love story in which by some fantastic means Sam and Theo get together. It leaves us back at the starting point. Theo gets seduced by an AIOS and then dumped just as his wife dumped him. This is the second film in a row for me where Scarlett Johansson is a bitch in the movie, the other one being "Don Jon." Don't see that one either if you like SJ. Stick to her in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" coming in April and "Lucy" coming in August.
