When Hitler was serving in WW1 as dispatch runner, his regiment found an English mascot- a white Jack Russell terrier on the battlefield and kept it. It immediately started to follow Hitler around and even slept beside him in the trench. Hitler grew found of the dog which was named "Fuchsl" (German- "Little Fox"). Hitler played with him often and intended to keep him. He was offered 200 Marks for him at one point but refused. In August 1917 Fuchsl vanished, believed either killed or stolen. Hitler was devastated but would postwar own serveral German Shepherds including his beloved Blondie that filled that void. There is no doubt Hitler loved animals, especially dogs for their loyalty and obedience. When Blondie had to be put down in the Russian advance on Berlin, Hitler was NOT being cruel at all. He was heartbroken to have to test Himmler's cyanide on his beloved dog, but also did not want her to fall into Russian hands to be tortured or taken. When Blondie died, Hitler's plan of suicide was reinforced. Hitler also regretted the loss of Blondie's pup "Wolf"- his favorite. All the other bunker dogs were shot to prevent capture.
