The Lyrics

A funny thing happened over the Hague on Feb 14, 1945 when a group of Spitfire Mk.XVIs spotted the launch of a V-2 as it cleared a tree line. Scotsman Tommy "Cupid" Love closed on the rapidly rising rocket and once in his sights opened up with both 20s and both .50s... and missed. The rocket outclimbed the fire and a good thing too b/c had he hit it (either the fuel tanks or the Amatol warhead), the resulting mega-explosion would have killed him and several of the other Spits around him. He is the only known pilot to attempt to shoot down a V-2. There is an obscure ref to an American B-24 gunner that downed a V-2 with a .50 MG, but no proof. AFAIK, no aircraft ever killed a V-2 once in flight and no mobile launchers were ever lost either. The V-2s max speed in climb was Mach 3, max in terminal dive was Mach 6!!!
He shot at a V-2
in sightline

Spitfire Mk.XVI on a cruise
V-2 spyin’
Then one was risin’

Tommy Love soon saw it
It was skyward bound
Kept his Spitfire steady
Scotsman determined to shoot it down

[The rocket too fast to speed of sound]

He shot at a V-2
Was in sightline
For time (few seconds)

Had to shoot
Had to shoot
Had to shoot
Freak sighting of “Big Ben”*
He was prepared
With fast Merlin speed
Rounds, guns did send

[It out climbed them]

Was scary
He shot at a V-2
Was in sightline
(Amatol warhead proximity)
* Spit pilots engaged in hunting V-2 sites called rising V-2s "Big Bens"! Was rare to see one in the air...

So, Rob, what's you "Spell" count up to? At times I'm almost tempted to get back on the train.

I saw a V1 in a museum in Kansas. Didn't the Brits chase them down and tip the wings? Scary stuff.

Spitfires, Tempests, the Meteor jet, and P-51s all chased the V-1 which had a level flying speed of 404 mph. Some were tipped using disturbed air flow of a fighter near it that flipped its wing violently upward. The US and USSR copied the V-1 during WW2, the US going as far as to make its own version- the Loon for the invasion of Japan. The Henschel V-4 was the bigger threat with a longer fuselage, ramjet engine, and canards. Would not have been caught by the aircraft of 1945. Many believe the postwar "Ghost Rockets" in the Baltic were V-4s and modified V-1s tested by the Reds occupying Peenemunde and Misdroy...

During WW2, a German Flak 43 gun in the field hit 6" rockets fired by either a Typhoon or Tempest aircraft!!!
