The Lyrics
The original Spitfire designed by RJ Mitchell in 1934 goes back to a RAF specification for a new fighter (F.7/30) of 1930. The aircraft was originally called the Shrew but the President of Vickers (a subsidiary of Supermarine) Robert MacClean proposed "Spitfire" based on his "little Spitfire" of a daughter Ann. The name stuck* but unfortunately the Type 224 did not work out. It was a metal and fabric monoplane with inverted gull wings and ugly mound-shaped main wheel fairings that carried part of an evaporative cooling system as well as 2 of the 4 MGs of 7.7mm. It was powered by a Goshawk II engine of only 600 hp and was slow at 228 mph max. speed. Ceiling was high 39,000 ft but climb was slow at 1500 fpm. The RAF declined the aircraft and it ended-up as a gunnery target. Meanwhile, the Spitfire name was retained for the Type 300 with the new Merlin engine, redesigned gear, rudder, elliptical wing, and 8x MGs which flew in 1936.
