The Lyrics

This first SAM came from designers at Peenemunde (EMW Division) who envisioned the interceptor missile as a scaled-down V-2 with more advanced guidance system and a totally different type of rocket propulsion system. The project was started in 1942 but delayed by Goering until 1943 and then initial production was slow in 1944. The C-2 Wasserfall weighed 3.5 tons and carried a 520 lb HE warhead. Its 17,600 lb st rocket motor running off Salbei and Visol could get it to 65,000 ft in 40 seconds out to 30 miles range! Because it was on constant alert it used the fuel for spontaneous combustion when in contact but unlike the V-2 there were no steam turbopumps to get it to the combustion chamber- it was forced through by compression tanks. Its guidance system was a complex command and control with various sensors and the V-2's inertial system which kept it on target in the general direction. 55 test launches were made with a Flak unit and some bomber losses were reported by the Germans although the Allies thought those lost were hit by a powerful new Flak gun! Some night shots were also performed using IR sensors. It is reported that the RAF dumped flares manually when spotting a launch below! Captured units went to the US where the design was the inspiration for the NIKE missile.
Wasserfall, the C-2
First SAM tried

It looked much like a scaled-down V-2
Bomber killin’
EMW buildin’

Was high demand for it
Largest SAM around
From Peenemunde
Designed for intercept, bombers downed

[Warhead was HE 520 lbs]

Wasserfall, the C-2
First SAM tried
Short time

Was first used
Was first used
Was first used
With a Flak test unit
Shot into air
Rocket artillery
Hard to maintain it

[Test launches proved it]

War booty
Wasserfall, the C-2
First SAM tried
(became US postwar NIKE)
