Original Song Title:

"Lover, come back to me"

Original Performer:

Mildred Bailey

Parody Song Title:

"Rover, come back to me"

Parody Written by:

Ralph E. Shaffer

The Lyrics

Rumor has it that Sigmund Romberg owned a flock of racing pigeons. The fastest bird was Rover. But he had a bad habit of stopping in the middle of a race to play with other birds. He also would fly off course frequently and not return for days at a time. Caused Romberg great grief. One day Rover flew off and never returned. Siggy sat down and wrote this eulogy. Another in my parody series, "An Evening with Sigmund Romberg."
How blue the sky,

How green the grass.

You had to fly,

You're gone - Alas!

This broken heart of mine is singing

Rover, where can you be?

You flew so fast

The other day.

But came in last,

You stopped to play.

This broken heart of mine is singing,

Rover, come back to me.

When I remember all the goodies that I made for you,

For you, only,

Now I fear that you will end up in a pigeon stew.

Right now, I'm feeling lonely.

The sky's still blue,

And so am I.

I do mis you,

Why did you fly?

This broken heart of mine's still singing,

Rover, come back to me.

There's no trace of "pigeon English" in this. But "Siggy" sounds like a smoke!

Very moving. I'm the same way about many of my former kitty cats.
