The Lyrics

The series goes marching on.
Do you see the Ed Fitzgerald sailing proudly cross the lake
With a crew of able seamen and a load of ore to take
To the steel mill at Zug Island*, an old record speed to break
The Fitz goes sailing on!

Glory, glory what a story!
'Til it started getting gory
Never reached the other shore-y
The mighty Fitz went down

The largest ship to sail the lake when launched in 'fifty-eight
She carried products from the mines at a most prodigious rate
Until one night in 'seventy-five she met an awful fate
The mighty Fitz went down

In the darkness of the evening sudden squalls began to form
The giant vessel soon became the plaything of the storm
Just a few more miles and she'd have reached a refuge, safe and warm
The mighty Fitz went down

Freighter vanished without warning
Friends and family in mourning
Legend of the lake a-borning
As mighty Fitz went down

As a rogue wave swamped the hatches and the hull began to split
The Fitz began to break in two, a bolt of lightning hit
The final words the captain said were without a doubt "Oh shit!"*
When mighty Fitz went down

The dead of Lake Superior lie ever in their graves
The epitaph of ship and crew are written on the waves
While a poet, in some lines of verse, her memory he saves
The mighty Fitz lives on

Wind and rain and hail and thunder
Tore the giant ship asunder
Act of God, or human blunder?
The mighty Fitz went down
*Zug Island, near Detroit was the port where the ore would be unloaded, Cleveland was where the Edmund Fitzgerald was to spend the winter.
* A friend once told me that the final words from airplane cockpits just before a crash were something similar to this. I once slid on an icy street and bumped into a parked car. My sister-in-law was driving a school bus on a hill when it skidded into a snow drift. We both used the same four letter expression. I can imagine the crew of the ship were no different.
