The Lyrics

This song is a reworked version of Johnny Cash's classic "Rock Island Line", only updated to reflect the Port Jervis Line, a joint operation of New Jersey Transit and Metro-North providing commuter rail service between Hoboken, NJ and Port Jervis, NY. It is spoken/sung from a commuter's perspective.
Now here's a little story about the Port Jervis Line
Well the Port Jervis Line runs from Port Jervis to Hoboken
I ride it five days a week and I know
That if I take a ride all the way to New York, now
I don't have to drive and pay Thruway tolls
Well a train driver pulled into Middletown station
And a man hollered and asked him what he had on board and he said

I got commuters
I got commuters
From Hoboken
Just heading home
It's the end of the day
Yeah, that's cool
Trying to beat the clock

Well he said you're all right boy, you didn't have to pay Thruway tolls
You can just go on your way, heading north to Port Jervis
And as he went through he looked back at the man and he said
Well I fooled you
I fooled you
It's an excursion
It's an excursion
It's a special excursion

Down the Port Jervis Line she's a mighty good road
Port Jervis Line it's the road to ride
Port Jervis Line it's a mighty good road
Well if you ride it you've got to ride it the way you find it
Get your ticket at Hoboken Terminal for the Port Jervis Line

Looked cloudy near Otisville and it looked like rain
Round the curve was another train
Northbound train on a southbound track
Darn right he's leaving but he won't be back

Down the Port Jervis Line it's a mighty good road
Port Jervis Line it's the road to ride
Port Jervis Line it's a mighty good road
Well if you ride it you've got to ride it the way you find it
Get your ticket in Secaucus for the Port Jervis Line

Oh I may be right and I may be wrong
But you're going to miss me when I'm gone
Well the engineer said before he died
There were two more drinks that he'd like to try
The conductor said what could they be
A hot cup of coffee and a cold glass of tea

Down the Port Jervis Line, a mighty good road
Port Jervis Line, it's the road to ride
Port Jervis Line, it's a mighty good road
Well if you ride it, you're really going to like it
Get your ticket up in Suffern for the Port Jervis Line
