The Lyrics

In case you chaps on that side of the pond hadn't noticed, we've had a change of government over here, one that has left no party with enough seats to form a government on their own, so what the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties have done is form an official coalition government, the first the country has seen for an awfully long time. Fingers crossed they manage to sort this one out...
We've got the very model of a modern coali-she-yun
Dave Cameron and all the Cons no more in opposi-she-yun
Yet still too small no overall majority posi-she-yun
And so a pact has finally cracked electoral tradi-she-yun

You see that most "first past the post" results are not proportionate
One tiny swing can often bring success that's most extortionate
But now we've found this time around a diff'rent disposi-she-yun
The Cons concede that what we need's a modern coali-she-yun

The Cons concede that what we need's a modern coali-she-yun
They're all agreed we really need a modern coali-she-yun
Yes, to succeed, we really need a modern coali-she-yun

So Dave and pals asked Liberals to join them in the cabinet
And Clegg and Co thought "yay! let's go! One chance for power, we're grabbin' it"
Nick Clegg will try the Deput-y Prime Minister's posi-she-yun
In our new model Con-Dem-twaddle modern coali-she-yun

Nick Clegg will try the Deputy Prime Minister's posi-she-yun
In our new model Con-Dem-twaddle modern coali-she-yun

The cut and thrust as they discussed the balances of policies
Which bits from whose they need to choose to optimise their qualities
Because both sides must compromise - that's the main precondi-she-yun
If they're to make and not soon break their modern coali-she-yun

It makes good sense to give that Vince Cable responsibility
'Specially because we think George Osborne has no great ability
Although he'll grab his post in cabinet so very greedily
He'll soon be out, there is no doubt, and hopefully quite speedily

He'll soon be out, there is no doubt, and hopefully quite speedily
He'll scream and shout and thrash about as he's ejected speedily
We'll see him pout, when he's chucked out and hopefully quite speedily

But will we see FPTP replaced, for there's objec-she-yuns
Me, I prefer Single Transfer'ble Vote for our elec-she-yuns
Will they concede it is indeed of systems probably the best?
Will they take note a fairer vote is in our country's interest?

Will they concede it is indeed of systems probably the best?
Will they take note a fairer vote is in our country's interest?

The light of our new coalition is already flickering
As the dog-in-the-manger types resume their petty bickering
The right-wing press will do their best to highlight every little thing
They're hypocrites, the little souls, sod them and their belittling
The give and take they'll need to make ain't easy, but they're trying it
It's not a fudge so don't prejudge and say that we're not buying it
For what we need is a new breed of honest politi-she-yuns
'Cause each mistake may make or break our modern coali-she-yun

Each mistake may make or break our modern coali-she-yun
As we partake just one mistake may break our coali-she-yun
Please stay awake, for heaven's sake or for our coali-she-yun

Don't we all hate the aim "frustrate all of the others' knavish tricks"?
It may seem strange our brand new age of partnership in politics
Our Con-Dem-Nation starts its con-stitutional expedi-she-yun
Into the very model of a modern coali-she-yun

Our Con-Dem-Nation starts its con-stitutional expedi-she-yun
Into the very model of a modern coali-she-yun

"Con-Dem Nation"...clever turn of a phrase. I almost did a take on the election (I'm VERY well-informed for a Yank) to Petula Clark..."Brown's down!"...but I didn't want to be-Labo(u)r the point. Great job. ;D

This might be interresting, if they really do push reform to proportionate government you'll end up with 5-10 parties in by another 2-3 elections, like my country of others with the same type... i.e parodist heaven for you!

Fine and imaginative parody of a challenging lyric. Warns Americans of the problems with more than 2 parties. 555 seats for yours, with no back-benchers!

Smart, sharp, and typically astute erudi-she-yun!

Will there be compromise or gridlock? Great rhyming and very well done, Phil, especially, as noted by OMR, the "Con-Dem Nation."

Thanks, everyone :-)

OMR - you should: I've done enough on US politics, it'd be interesting to hear an American's take on ours. And Brown most certainly is down (I was considering a Bugsy Malone "Down down down & out" parody, myself)

Peter - a side effect of PR that I hadn't thought of.. have to start campaigning

Barry - whether it's a warning or an advertisement for coalitions is yet to be decided.. I'm optimistic (while remaining fairly cynical.. a strange mix)

Fiddlegirl - :-)

JJ - "Con-Dem Nation" is one I thought up myself, though I'll bet that many, many others had the same idea, too. It's a bit of an obvious one. So far, the compromise aspect is actually looking quite promising - there have been minor rumblings from the two parties' backbenchers, but nothing like what I was expecting. A really quite large majority of people seem to recognize that in the current political and economic climate this is the best available option for the country: it's not what most of them would have chosen, but.. well, it's a compromise.
