The Lyrics

Another song for which I am indebted to "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" for the inspiration.
In a bar by the Commons a Tory MP
Muttered "tillo, Portillo, Portillo"
"But you're a right-winger, pray why should it be
You say 'tillo, Portillo, Portillo'?
Are you going to start a new leadership race?
Do you really want HIM in Ian Duncan-Smith's place?
Are you after the 'caring Conservative face'
of Portillo, Portillo, Portillo?"

I asked him straight up "Are you hatching a plot
for Portillo, Portillo, Portillo"
He looked a bit smug, and replied "No, I'm not
pro Portillo, Portillo, Portillo.
The Conservative Party is in such a mess
Who can get us out of it? Not IDS.
And certainly not somebody who I detest:
Portillo, Portillo, Portillo"

He sat back in his seat and he lit a cigar
(Portillo, Portillo, Portillo)
Saying "no, I don't really like things how they are"
(Portillo, Portillo, Portillo)
For a leadership race, I would feel no remorse
But I can't challenge Ian directly, of course
So I need a more friendly, left wing stalking horse:
Portillo, Portillo, Portillo"

...not sure about your use of the word "originally", then: it's been parodied loads of times, and I'll bet the Muppets weren't close to being first. What did they write about?
