Today learning to read, write and spell correctly is regarded as "acting white" and "racist". The political and cultural differences of that era are still here today, along with a layer of craziness the most wild-eyed fanatics of Antebellum America could never have fathomed.

Just learned today that Lincoln overturned the court martial conviction of John Basil Turchin, commander of the 19th Illinois Infantry, for encouraging his men to rape and pillage the civilian inhabitants of Athens, Alabama after the Confederate troops had already evacuated. Dismissed from the service, Lincoln reinstated Turchin and promoted him to Brigadier General.
