The Lyrics

A little ballad about one of my travel horror stories, from a trip I took back in the 90s: the hotel itself is not normally a bad place, but I had the misfortune to arrive in town the same week a fire-and-brimstone church was holding its international convention.
Well, since I arrived in Sweden
I needed a place to dwell
The cheapest in downtown Uppsala
was Basic Hotel
Looking for
A good place to sleep, but Sweden
ain't all that cheap, no
I had to sleep somewhere at night

And although I always stayed there
in the low-rate fam'ly room
Didn't think so many others
would preach about my doom.
It happened when
Some fundies came in, brother
Raved about sin, yeah
Trying to win some souls in town.

Well, their sermons kept on going
and my wheelchair made them shout:
"Satan keeps you off your crippled feet,
we'll bind him and then cast him out...
Praise the Lord!"
Had they lost their minds, maybe?
No one to bind, no,
They couldn't find the devil there.

Hey, now, if you're bound for Sweden
hope it's not the trip from hell--
avoid those church conventions booked
at Basic Hotel.
My timing was
a run of bad luck, baby
it made my trip suck, yeah
Ending up stuck there for the night.

I'm sorry to hear about your story, but your pacing was off in several places.

I'd have to agree that this is below your average... but then, if you think about it, half must be... and we've come to expect such a lot already :-)

Consider yourself lucky: The big news story in Sweden this spring and summer is that a minister from Uppsala county had his au pair/slave mistress (sic!) murder his second wife and try to murder his second mistresses (sic! sic!) husband. He's also suspected for murdering his first wife, who officially drowned in the bathtub after having fallen and hit her head, while on a way overdose of sleeping pills that she herself never had seen a doctor to get, but he had a recepie for and was known for using. And that's not all: Uppsala is one h*ll of an ugly town (I grow up 60 kilometers from it). It's one of our oldest so the politicians claime that the deterioration is part of it's cultural value or some bullshit like that. And you think that a city that is among the 10 largest in the country, and a university town at that, should have a good athletic team in at least ANY sport, but no. Going there always made me a bit depressed. I'm sorry for your relatives if they live there. :-(
