The Lyrics

In the well-known lyrics, written in a far-off era when some of us were entering adolescence, Johnny Mercer wrote, "Speaks Latin - my Satin Doll". So, why couldn't she speak some Yiddish?
Chicken soup served with -- gold ladles
Live band, ice sculpture,-- sweet tables
Speaks Yiddish-- my Skittish Doll.

Cousin's Bar Mitzvah -- wire lift dress,
Built kind of zaftig, -- but a 'princess'
Can't mess with -- my Skittish Doll.

Uncle Seymour was right: when I'm near she's uptight as can be.
'Cause she's noticed me drool, and she ain't cool for fooling with me.
(Kenahora!)

After the dinner, -- candle-lighting,
Alone at our table -- looks inviting.
Fingers wander, -- but that is all.
Slaps hand back,-- my Skittish Doll.
Can't mess with -- my Skittish Doll.

Glossary: zaftig – overweight, hefty, also buxom; juicy or succulent. Kenahora! A commonly used, but somewhat archaic Yiddish expression, based on a Hebrew invocation to keep evil influence away.

As I wrote before you actually published this here today: "Mazel Tov! 555 fountain pens to the bar mitzvah boy." Better even than the Latin version.
