The Lyrics

In 1945, there was frantic activity at Peenemunde to develop the A-9/A-10 ICBM to hit NYC. Only the upper stage prototype of the A-9, the A-4b nicknamed "The Bastard" was fired in early 1945. This was supposed to lead to the A-9 upper stage to be mated to a lower stage A-10 rocket. The two-stage rocket was never completed due to the Soviet advance and evacuation of Peenemunde and the other test facility at Misdroy that was working on a longer range V-1, the Henschel V-4 with a ramjet engine. The V-4 was further along and had launch ramps constructed facing the North to attack Sweden IF that nation tried to join the Allies with Germany losing vital iron ore. Another variant of the A-9 was the EMW piloted version which like the EMW A4 and A6 were drawing board projects (the A6 design leading to the X-15 in the US).
Braun’s been workin' on the V-2,
Trials for longer range
Braun’s been workin' on the V-2,
To hit a continent away
Can't you see the “Bastard”* flying?
The A4b with wings- thus is born
Can't you hear the Captain** shouting
"Hear that engine roar!!!"

Hitler, don't you know,
Hitler, don't you know,
Hitler, don't you know we‘re at war?
Hitler, let it go,
Hitler, let it go,
Hitler, on Misdroy is the V-4***

Someone's in Berlin- the Red Army
Someone's in Berlin, we all know
Someone's in Berlin- the Red Army
A-9s not ready to go…

Upper stage not ready to go
Lower stage development went-too-slow
EMW spacecraft? No!****
A-9s not ready to go…
* Bastard= name given to the winged A-4b ** Captain= von Braun was technically rank of SS Captain *** V-4= Henschel V-4 on Misdroy, in development as cruise missile **** EMW spacecraft= piloted versions of the A-4 missile The A-4b as tested: http://www.allworldwars.com/image/102/A4-35.jpg

Rob - The political satirist Tom Lehrer wrote a great song titled Werner von Braun in 1965...check it out. Also, wasn't the George Peppard movie Operation Crossbow about an effort to stop Germany's New York Rocket as well as shut down the V-1 and V-2? Fine job as usual. ;D

OMR, "Operation Crossbow" is one of my favorite movies as a kid. But growing up, I discovered a range of mistakes. Hanna Reitsch DID fly a V-1 but she was lying prone and it was air-launched by a He-111. Also, the depicted A-9/A-10 ICBM in the underground bunker was actually too big for that plan. IIRC, there was no fortification designed for that missile in 1945. IF the war lasted longer and they had the tech to transfer, it probably would have been launched from the Alpine Redoubt in Thuringia in the open, on a massive erector pad with flak nearby for defense. The V-2, OTOH, had several facilites being built for underground storage and launches and even had train-launched versions!!!
