The Lyrics

For Ages of AmIRight Round 4, a parody about my line of work in real life, based on a song from the 1950s musical "The Pajama Game", that was a hit in 1954.
Original song on YouTube, featuring original vinyl
Under a sign, three golden balls
A place that's not like all the malls
McGwire balls, and paintball guns
It's called, the Buy-N-Sell, ole!

Workin' here, it is a test
Our customers, they aren't the best
From noobs to nuts, and all the rest
Here at, the Buy-N-Sell, ole!

At the Army-Navy store or antique shop, oh, geez,
I have worked with hoarders, geeks and Picker wannabes
But here at the shop I'm a-workin' at
My co's are cool, they live and laugh, and talk of much

I sell, CDs, and DVDs
And neon signs, with camel, Joe
Guitars, and guns, and gems and gold
Here at, the Buy-N-Sell, ole!

Run background checks, and credit checks
And then go home, to drink a Beck's
No day is dull, but some are wrecks
Here at, the Buy-N-Sell, ole!

Did you see "Clerks"', or "Adventureland"? You probably have quite a few tales of workplace absurdity to fill a screenplay. Movies like that usually don't do big box office, yet find a devoted appeal on DVD and cable.

I was browsing through our families' Time/Life music records for songs from the 1950's. I tried to hear Archie Bleyer's version and the Venture's version of the OS, but I loved Bleyer's version better and the Venture's version, although a groovy beat, I kind of expected singing, but didn't have any idea that Venture's played instrumental music. Well, as for the parody, very good description of your workplace and I would have loved to shopped in your store as well. There are some buy and sell places near where I work as well, like the Goodwill store...no wait, it's more of a donation center so we can't well the stuff we donate. The people who run the Goodwill store sells the items we donate. I get my books, CD'S and DVD's there. Well, I'm giving a 55.5% discount and I'll still try to browse through my Time/Life Music albums to find more of the 50's songs I may use if I decide to participate in this Ages contest. BTW, I missed you on the last one.

Nice work! I never heard the OS before, but it was pretty darn good, and your spoof was pretty darn good as well!

Thanks to all who have commented & voted!

Buy & Sell: I have enough stories of craziness to fill 1 1/2 screenplays, I've worked in this business nearly all of my adult life and love it aside from all the nutbars who come in and people who bring in junk or stolen items... I haven't seen either one of those movies.
CMM: I'm glad you liked the OS, it's a lot of fun. Goodwill is completely different from pawn shops and buy-n-sell places... I had an electrical failure at my place that caused me to move into a friend's guesthouse, barely the size of a large shed, and was on a dialup-level internet connection that aborted frequently.

AFW: I am... the place I work isn't exactly glamorous like Pawn Stars' shop, I do most of my work in the back or on the computer and have my own office area, but appear behind the counter fairly often. It is a very good use....

2Eagle: Pretty much... we had a guy come in with some 19th-century French flintlock dueling pistols in a black leather case yesterday, we bought them for $600 and haven't priced them yet, and he has some Imperial Russian militaria that is offering us. I always have hot cider and cookies out during the cold months, which is something I started at the first one I worked at.

Alvin: Hilarious! Thank you for the fives...

Abbott: Thanks! The OS is not well-known anymore...

Look for my annual Christmas parody sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas, on an AmIRight near you. ;-)

Is a Buy and Sell a real place? Looks like a fun job!
Andria - November 13, 2011 - Report this comment
Matthias: It is basically a pawn shop that buys and sells the usual items found in pawn shops... I have worked in them since I graduated high school aside from a handful of brief forays into other fields of work... it is a lot of fun, it can be scary at times too, I have even been through an armed robbery of the one I'm working at now... thanks for v/c...

Mr. 1s and his friend: Please explain why you leave me all 1s when you vote them...

(Ages) Nice to read/sing the second time. Yeah, I actually went to a Buy and Sell shop the other day. Also near my place of work and no, it's not the Goodwill store, and nothing like it, in fact. Actually I've been doing more buying and less selling. LOL!! :) Great work.

(Ages) Don't think I've ever been to a pawn shop, and if I have I sure as hell can't remember it. You seem to be missing a couple syllables when it comes to the title line, but otherwise this was pretty good. 455

Ages...okay...first off, I LOVE The Pajama Game. I don't know how many people are going to say that in a given day...but I seriously do. Love it. So...the OS makes me happy. Secondly...I also love Pawn Stars, and am going to just imagine you working with Chumlee from now on, Andria. This was fun!! :)

This parody was a fun read... and I enjoyed the OS as well. I've worked retail (briefly), although not in a Buy-N-Sell-type place, and I know how some of the people can be.
