The Lyrics

In the Midwest, In the Thirties,
Rate of bank robb'ries would zoom there
Often heard machine guns boom there,
And the prisons - kept a room there

For the two slick, crooks a' chancing
Spotted here and there, and Lansing
Crooked - a lot - in Texas
The getaway's their thing...

When you'd hear police car sirens throb
You would know they pulled another job
Duck all those bullets as they zing
That pair knows how to do their thing..
(Rat-tat-tat tat-tat)

They'd speed off - Buck on - the running board
Bonnie'd drive and really gun that Ford
Next day news headlined their bank fling
They were as slick as anything...

Bonnie and Barrow
Two famous crooks of their day
Bonnie and Barrow
For a while, they made crime pay
Lived fast and narrow
Money and danger was sought
Wound up dead, Bonnie and Barrow
When their ass...got...caught...
(Take 'em away, boys!)

Rat-tat-tat-tat, rat-tat-tat-tat, rat-tat-tat-tat

They'd rob in - Missouri, Arkansas
Hit the smaller banks, and shoot the law
They lived it up and partied much
Drank beer, took photographs, and such

(instrumental)

Bonnie and Barrow
Two famous crooks of their day
Bonnie and Barrow
For a time, they made crime pay
Lived fast and narrow
Money and danger was sought
Wound up dead, Bonnie and Barrow
When their ass...got..caught...
(Take 'em away, boys!)

Ratta-tat-tat, ratta-tat-tat,
ratta-tat-tat -tat-tat-tat

(The Bonnie/Barrow Polka..)

AFW - This puts the song by Georgie Fame to shame. Put the fives in this bag and keep your hands where we can see them! ;D

Thanks, OMR, and thanks, Rob...I knew they really got a round..

The rounds they took "almost" matched their ages when they died ;-)

Your OS choices really take me back sometimes. Of course the Andrews 'Sisters' were well before my time but a lot of that music was still around in the 50s/60s, with oldies airplay and private record collections.

As for the parody, some deft rhyming (Lansing/chancing, Arkansas/law) and your usual fine brushstrokes of detail. You departed from the rhyme scheme of the song, but who says you have to keep it? One thing, though - shouldn't it be Parker and Barrow, for consistency? Gotta say I still dig Georgie Fame though, and Foggy Mountain Breakdown, not to mention Faye Dunaway.

Thanks, LL...appreciate your in-depth comments...but could you elaborate on rhyme scheme change...I can't seem to find it...I considered Parker and Barrow...it would be the obvious choice, but I don't always like to be obvious..also.Bonnie and Barrow seemed to have better euphonics....again, I appreciate your pin point critiques..I think we should all do more of this..

Sorry, Airfarce, I misled you. I didn't mean the rhyme scheme, which you followed; I meant the rhyme phonics. I like to vowel-match as much as possible, especially on the rhymes, as I find it more challenging , but that's just me. A total departure can be very effective sometimes, as it was here. And yeah, I think if you find something jars or doesn't sit well, you should say so. It's what the comments are for and I certainly find it helpful. So sock it to mine any time. Oh no! What have I said?
