The Lyrics

The so-called "evil empire" has not won a World Series championship since 2009, yet, bizarrely, the Astros (who won two years ago) and the Red Sox (who won twice since then, including last year) are still somehow considered "the rebellion". Can Verlander, Cole, and the best of the National League be overcome, preventing the 2010s from joining the 1980s as a "lost decade" for the Bronx Bombers?
(parts in parentheses sung to the tune of “The Phantom of the Opera!”)

Ten long years
Watching such mediocrity
Ten whole years
Without a Series victory

In my mind
I see championships of past seasons
But I find
That my memory of them has dimmed…

All those games, playoff games
Lost and gone, lost and gone….

Ten seasons,
Long seasons,
By and by.
Other teams
Taking them all!
The players go deep,
But pitching falls asleep.
Will the Yankees win?

And games pass,
And weeks pass,
Seasons fly,
Still they can’t open that door.
In August haze,
I count the doggone days
‘Til the Yankees win once more.

And sometimes, at night time,
When they blow someone out,
I try and try
To overcome that doubt.

And years come,
And years go,
Hitters try.
Still they can’t match the Core Four. (No Jeter or Rivera!)
They bang their fists
And join the Injured List.
Will the Yankees win once more?

And “Phantom”, yes, “Phantom”,
It still lights up Broadway.
Yet we, at the Stadium,
Seek bygone days.

The Red Sox,
The Astros,
Win and win,
Yet somehow they’re fan-beloved! (And we’re still thought an Empire?!)
A decade lost?
Will it be worth the cost
When the Yankees win once more!?
Not yet, if games 2 and 3 are any indication.
