The Lyrics

The Sign In Stranger guestbook is a notorious forum in the Steely Dan fan online community. Sometimes people actually discuss the music of Steely Dan and on occasion one can leave burning questions behind dealing with life and death matters. And so it happened that LucklessPedestrian wondered about the meaning of sauce and gravy, because apparently American Italians use these words for different things. This smelled like a parody at once, so we scanned the Steely Dan lyrics database and found the perfect song: the Book of Liars had a a parody written all over!
Bye and bye now
We'll get over
The things we've cooked and the things we rinse out
But not just now when
I can "t remember
Exactly what it was I thought we had
"Cause I waited so long girl and I came so far
To find out you're not always cooking what you say you are

And there's a lump in the sauce or gravy
What a shame

Uncle Bill came in late last night
Drunk on homemade wine
Fell down hard in the driveway
Hung his teeth out on the laundry line
He's a Cookery Card Club member, oh what a joy
And it's Goodbye Kitten for the Tjap Choy

Yet another lump in the sauce and gravy, what a shame
They crush a lump in the sauce and gravy, what a shame

Jars imploding
The long night passing
Croutons dancing in the frozen yogurt spawn
Here's one left stranded at the zero crossing
With a spoonful of its half-life left to carry on
But now the stove's much warmer than it cooks today
And if the bad Chef ever takes me back to say

Then I'll just look in my sauce and gravy for your name
I'll just look in the sauce and gravy for your name
