Parody Song Title:

"General Belgrano"

Parody Written by:

Robert D. Arndt Jr.

The Lyrics

Dedicated to Margaret Thatcher (aka The Iron Lady) for daring to send a task force over 8000 miles to retake the Falkland Islands, proving to the world that the UK could still fight wars alone independent of the US. The sinking of the cruiser General Belgrano by HMS Conquerer was the first sign that the Argentines had underestimated the resolve of the UK and its female PM.
Falklands Task Force South proceeds
Air and naval support at speed
Aware of threats of Argentines
(25) de Mayo and (General) Belgrano recede

Both recalled back to mainland
But Northwood had other plans
(HMS) Conquerer then took a stand
Torpedoes fired, explosions

[Tough rescue operation]

Down went Belgrano
With great loss of life
Exclusion Zone far from
Yet Maggie ordered the strike
Two fish struck Belgrano
With 321 dead
Outcry, condemnation
Yet Maggie meant what she said

The recall to mainland ports
Would never be permanent
Weather- when it cleared
Back East, warships would be sent

(25) de Mayo for carrier attack
With Skyhawks and Etendards
Belgrano for surface action
Task Force vessels without guard

[“Sink her!” order to Conquerer]

Down went Belgrano
With great loss of life
Exclusion Zone far from
Yet Maggie ordered the strike
Two fish struck Belgrano
With 321 dead
Outcry, condemnation
Yet Maggie meant what she said

“Repossess the islands, by force if need be”
Operation Corporate backed by "Iron Lady"
Maggie strongly defended her actions
Over the General Belgrano sinking

Naval bases blockaded, Argies lost it all
Jubilation in London, Thatcher standing tall

That was pretty pathetic of the Argentinian junta to send into battle a Depression era warship that had no chance of survival against the most modern weapons of the Eighties -- especially when they actually had weapons, such as the Super Entendard fighter armed with Exocet missiles, that did pose a threat to British warships

Belgrano wasn't to be used against the Brit carriers but to attack the task force vessels AFTER 25 de Mayo launched Skyhawks and Super Entendards with missiles against the former threats. However, the Argentines should have anticipated that Brit subs would accompany any carrier group.

I was working two jobs at the time and have never really caught up on the news from the Falklands War. I do recall that someone publicly proposed a nuclear attack on an Argentine city. Also, that French factory workers cheered when they heard that the Exocet missile had sunk HMS Sheffield.
