The Lyrics

Before reading the main parody, I strongly recommend checking out the bizarre original 1995 video production for a classic piece of Japanese pop-kitsch, featuring the highly decorative Maki Nomiya and her team of priceless nerds from the urban jungles of Tokyo's manic Shibuya club scene. You'll never see or hear anything quite like it. One of my favorite comments posted there was 'I have no idea what this is but I've watched it 10 times already!'

As an exclusive to Am I Righters, I've provided the Japanese lyrics and a complete original translation in song form below which you'll find nowhere else. The song itself is a parody of 1960s TV pop fashions, sounds, awkward dance moves and film clips. It was featured on Beavis and Butthead, though I never saw it, but I do recall it being used in one of the Austin Powers movies. It's a riot. Enjoy.

Oh, and I hope you like my own parody too.
TRICKY TRIGGY

Quadratic equations don't bother me, no
The axis is as plain as can be
Busy calculating, graphing just so
It's easy peasy, Japanesy

Tricky tricky trigonometry
That's the stubborn stumbling block for me
Tricky tricky trigonometry
Tricky Pythag'ras turns my feeble brain to mush, and woe is me

Logarithm problems they raise the bar
Sine, cosine and tangent mocking me - oh Mayday
Think I'll go and just sit in the car
An engineer I can never be - what Dad say

Tricky tricky trigonometry
Tricky trig will be the death of me
Icky sticky trigonometry
Hypotenuse is laughing as it's pathing and it keeps eluding me

Tricky tricky, so ridicky
Tricky tricky I feel sickie
Tricky tricky, Mousey Mickey
Tricky Dickie, Richard Nickie

Tricky tricky trigonometry
Driving me crazy, and it's killing me
Tricky tricky trigonometry
I still can't figure out the distance to the top of the tree

Tricky tricky trigonometry
Mr Land Surveyor won't you set me free?
Tricky trigo-trigonometry
How far is that ridge if two miles high? Oh why oh why you asking me!

Applied mathematics, wanna be a pro
My folks would be so proud of me
But if I build a bridge then down she go
Everyone is litigatory

Tricky tricky trigonometry
Tricky trig - it's for the bird and bee
Itchy trigger trigonometry
Maybe I'll commit a major massa-cree
Tricky icky trigonometry
Solution sticky, what can it be
I can't licky trigonometry
Elliptical illusions and triangular delusions - sanity?

'TWIGGY' (Leslie Hornsby, now Lawson) was an iconic London fashion model of the 'Swinging Sixties', associated with a waif-like, undernourished, underaged unisex look with cropped hair, heavy eye makeup and A-line minidresses. She was one of the first 'supermodels', and later went on to a moderately successful musical career in stage, film, recordings and television. She has distanced herself from the controversial 'starved model' look and is still actively modelling.

I DKTOS, but I'm choosing to recognize the hard work that went into this, and I'm a sucker for parodies that include pythagoras and hyponenuse.

I liked the laughing hypotenuse and your sneaking Mickie Mouse and my cousin in there...

As for the video....okay..I admit it...I watched it twice. Well, three times. I got a laugh over the one comment saying it got played on KROQ - that sounds about right! And there was one thing in the video that really cracked me up; Pippin will catch it, I am sure... not too many other people will recognize the reference I don't think.... :)

Way to go Merry. I knew I could rely on you to shun the DKOS route. I actually thought of you when I stuck your cousin in there.

... and you knew you could count on me to take that route, right? ;-D ... but I do remember Twiggy quite well.

Got a "bit" tired of seeing the word "tricky" so many times (although in her day, I could look at Paula Trickey as many times as possible), but do love trigonometry. Did you know that thousands of years before Magellan "proved" the Earth was round, the ancient Egyptians not only knew that, but estimated its circumference within 4% error, using only a stick, some rope, and trigonometry?

@ Glen. You're not wrong about the hard work. Formatting those side-by-side lyrics was a PITA. Thanks for your comment.

@ TT Your vote freaked me out, but I'm hoping the correct answer's 555, or 15? I know about the Egyptian discovery from Carl Sagan's Cosmos. It's really frightening when you think about it, how such fundamental knowledge could be ignored for so long. I wonder how much longer the Creationists will be around to deny evolution? Minor point: Magellan's crew proved it. Their captain at least proved it was hemispherical.

I'll explain if you ask, but won't bother otherwise. Yes, 555. (do you see anything but 5s on the vote board? ;)
What's really frightening is how much knowledge was *suppressed*, or even burned, by certain conquerors, and possibly certain religious groups. "Library at Alexandria" is still somewhat controversial, but cf. Galileo et al.

Merry: I watched it. Yes, I know what you are talking about. Gil Scott-Heron, correct? :) Seems a tad out of place when comapred to the tune in the video.

I myself also laughed at the gratuitous "Hello America" which randomly appeared on the bottom of the screen - resplendent in red, white and blue (how terribly ingenious) :)

LL: I enjoyed this very much. Tricky Triggy will now be going through my head. If it stays there too long though, beware! LOL :)
