I vaguely remember that scene, The Next Generation got really awkward sometimes, tried to hard to be socially progressive I guess.

^ nope Rob the most "Star Trek" I ever saw was through parodies on "Family Guy" or "Robot Chicken" or as far as the actual show goes I believe I saw bits and pieces of it as a wee little lad when my father watched it (he is quite the trekker!) as for me I took more interest in "Star Wars" and never looked back although I probably will end up watching some "Trek" here sometime in the near future I am interested to see William Windom's episode as everybody touts that as his best acting performance as for me I'll always remember Mr. Windom as the voice of Puppetino in "Pinocchio & The Emperor Of The Night" he did an exceptional (in my opinion) acting job in this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w_8EEc0IXs < Puppetino of course being the clown guy with Mick Jagger lips who turns Pinocchio back into a puppet as you'll notice the poster titled the video "the scariest animated kids' movie scene" and between Windom's evil laughter and the demented music I could easily see that scene giving kids the willies! but that's what I like about '80s animated family movies they were not afraid to be dark! interestingly enough James Earl Jones the voice of Vader from "Star Wars" is also in that movie as the voice of the evil Emperor Of The Night himself just go to the 2:33 mark in this video and see for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1776PvfUFE < so I find it interesting that two actors one best known for "Star Wars" and the other best known for a guest spot on "Star Trek" played the voices of the villains in that movie!

Easy there, Peter. Valeria (Sandal Bergman) kicked ass in "Conan the Barbarian." When she came back dressed as a Valkyrie, people were cheering. I remember because I was one of them! "Do you wanna live forever?" As for Thulsa Doom, no, I didn't really care for him or the snake transformation scene.

The episode you're referring to is called "The Doomsday Machine" which was device that looked like about a 1000-mile long dog turd that was roaming Federation space destroying entire planets. Windom is a Commodore whose starship was destroyed along with his entire crew in a skirmish with the machine, and so he is completely shell shocked. Seriously, nobody in the entire history of the series was ever as completely devastated as the Windom character ..... Later on, because he outranks Kirk, Windom commandeers the Enterprise and basically is about to pull the same suicidally stupid sh*t that got the first starsh*p destroyed; at which point Spock finds a "suic*dally stup*d sh*t" exception in Star Fleet regs that allows him to relieve Windom of command ........ At that point, like the traumatized, guilt-ridden, suicidal bastard that he had truly become, Windom hijacks a shuttlecrafts and flies it straight into the maw of this machine. And at this point, Windom, in a peformance worthy of a Tony award, really gives you a feel of what it would be like to be sucked into the maw of a machine powerful enough to vaporize Jupiter. Chilling stuff. One of my favorite episodes, BTW

A few notes on the above. The ship was USS- Constellation (NCC-1017) that encountered the "planet killer" in system L-374. It was miles long, but not 1000 by any stretch. The Constellation was commanded by Commodore Decker who failed to stop the machine due to its pure Neutronium hull. Constellation was badly damaged so Decker ordered his crew down to the third planet which was consumed by the machine. Decker lost 434 souls and sought revenge. He used General Order 104 to take command of Enterprise, but still could not defeat the machine. Having gone mad, Decker steals a shuttle and kills himself when entering the Maw. This caused minor damage to the machine. Kirk then plots to detonate the Constellation's impulse engines inside the Maw in the same manner. Piloting her until the last minute then beaming out. The 97 MT fusion explosion knocks the machine out dropping power to zero. The hulk just drifts in space because it's hull can't be destroyed.

Btw, both the Constellation and Enterprise were under 1000 ft while in the SW universe an ISD is one mile long. Vader's Executor was (depending on source) 8-11 miles long. Decker only said in the episode that the planet killer was miles long. FYI

Guess I should be careful about trusting 48 year old memories, especially when they've been laundered thru a heart-lung machine. How could I forget that classic bit of dialogue between Kirk and Decker -- Matt, where's your crew? .... On the third planet ... There IS no third planet! ... Dont you think I know that? There was; but not anymore.

Btw, the planet killer was approximately 1.7 miles long (2700 m). ~ Star Trek Minutiae
