The Lyrics

This just comes out from my heart - as a fellow skipperess I can feel only compass-ion to Laura Dekker and her ambition to circumnavigate the world.
She was born in a boat at high seas
Mom and Dad made her sailor to be
Lived more years at sea than at land
Dutch social workers just won't understand -

Who can she trust to and where can she sail ?
She's yearning for freedom and tradewinds that prevail
To the sea she wants to go, just to sail all alone -
She can sail real wild, none can treat 'er like a child!

Sailaway girl!

Your fire is burning and you're ready to go
You're only thirteen but you sail like a pro,
Go through the westerlies to tradewinds zone
Over Atlantic, to Americas you go!

Turning then southwards, sails at Panama furl
Slip to Pacific, cos' youre -

Sailaway girl!

Sailin' faster, faster all the time
You're under age, but - God knows, that ain't crime !

Sailaway girl!

She was born in a boat at high seas
Mom and Dad made her sailor to be
Doing the astro with using sextant -
Dutch social workers just won't understand -

Them can't she trust to - so when will she sail ?
She's yearning for freedom and to tradewinds that prevail
To the sea she wanna go, sail around the globe -
She can sail real wild, none should treat 'er like a child!

Sailaway girl!
I wrote a parody of this 80s rockabilly classic (a song of my youth, BTW) on just one spree, in ten minutes. It is salty blood which runs within Laura's veins, and being a sailor myself, I know how much she yearns out to the high seas. She is one amazing girl!

I would personally follow the tradewinds if I was thirteen and alone, and not go to the Roaring Forties at South Pacific - while that route is fast, those seas are dangerous even to adults.

FG and MS, I was only fifteen when I sailed first solo. And I didn't dare to go out of the safety of archipelago, not to speak about going to Atlantic. She has already spent alone seven weeks at Atlantic - when she was 11. Laura got in troubles with the UK officials when she sailed solo to UK last May. But the police could not find anything illegal in it, so they asked his dad to come and get her home. Her dad, Dick Dekker, had answered: "She can do it on her own just fine, so why am I needed?"Laura appears to be a very reasonable young woman and despite her age, she is a seasoned sailor. I am not worried to slightest extent she wouldn't survive the oceans - but it is the harbours I am worried of. There are many places in the world which are not good for a 13-year old girl.

This Stray Kitten has guts but I hope she knows what she's getting into. I have heard interviews with Mike Perham, a 17-year-old, who is currently the youngest to sail around the world (I think). He had a network of friends in various places to help at and between stops and there are many dangers out there including pirates, weather, accidents, etc. to contend with. That said, I loved the Stray Cats and your parody was no SOS but a ship shape 555.
