2. The Great Wall of China. It's estimated that millions worked on it for over 2,000 years. It extended over 6,000 miles, consumed the wealth of a nation and was a failure. Not only did it not stop invaders, it left the Chinese with no place to go. What if that money had been spent instead on military training, education, and diplomacy?
3. The Berlin Wall. Built in 1961, the Russians lied that it was meant to safeguard the East Germans' socialist paradise from the West. Actually, it was designed to stop the flood of East Germans trying to escape their hell. But in 1989 they knocked it down with hammers, the Soviet Empire died two years later and became the impoverished kleptocracy we still have.
4. North Korea, Iran, and other countries with dictatorships or a religious theocracy may not have actual walls, but walls that are built with soldiers and guns. Not to keep threats out, but to keep it's own people hostage.
So walls fail. They always fail. But what hasn't failed? America hasn't failed unless we waste our time and money on building a prison.

However, the border is quite protected. The United States allots $3.7 billion dollars a year on border patrolmen and $3.2 billion on border inspectors to protect the divide. The U.S. has also constructed a fence which runs along parts of the Mexican-American border. The resources already apportioned to protecting the border of our allied neighbor are astronomical. How many more U.S. tax dollars will go to fulfilling Trump’s fortified fantasies? Trump’s wall will cost billions, money which can instead be invested in our children’s education or top-notch health care for those in need.
Walls do not only act as physical barriers, but symbolic barriers. By creating an obvious divide between Mexico and America, Trump will be creating a divide between the American and Mexican people. Ever since Trump proposed his wall plans, racist and bigoted Americans have been striking Mexican-Americans while the iron is hot, blaming them for stealing American jobs, criminalizing America, and staying here illegally. By building a wall, Trump will enforce that notion, and further build walls around American hearts. By building a wall, Trump will be destroying the equality that has allowed America to take progressive leaps forward, instead of regressive steps back. By building a wall, Trump will teach the children of America that our “land of the free, and home of the brave” builds barriers, instead of bridges.
