The Lyrics

Willie Nelson's cover version might be more famous, but the original is by Ned Sublette.
There's many a bigot down there in the swamps of ol' Dixie
There's many a white boy who calls the blacks "children of Ham"
They want segregation and say that they don't like race-mixing
But just after midnight, you'll find that it's all just a sham

'Cause I believe to my soul that inside every bigot's a hypocrite
They like to spread hate 'cause they're something they're trying to hide
Like the cowboy who says he hates gayness but deep down he's full of it
Most racists will secretly do what they claim to despise

Racists are frequently, secretly fond of black women
Why do you think that the Klan's called the "Boyz In Da Hood"?
There's many a racist who'll surely deny that with jungle fever he's brimmin'
But just like Mick Jagger, he knows that brown sugar tastes good

Senator Thurmond, as prejudiced as he's longwinded
He once filibustered the Civil Rights Bill for a day
But back home in the bedroom, his racial views would be rescinded
'Cause he had a black mistress; their love child he kept locked away

Racists are frequently, secretly fond of black women
Why else would they scream and shout so much 'bout mixing the race?
There's many a racist who'll surely deny that with jungle fever he's brimmin'
But when his friends ain't watching, he's kissing a pretty brown face

Now there's always some Klansman who says what the others just whisper
Whenever that happens, the Grand Wizard shoots him down dead
So when you talk to a skinhead, don't start singing Train's "Hey, Soul Sister"
Even though that song secretly plays inside his shaven head
Even though that song secretly plays in his cueball-like head

Racists are frequently, secretly fond of black women
Although they may say they like only the Aryan kind
There's many a racist who'll surely deny that with jungle fever he's brimmin'
But there lurks a black soulmate inside of his sick, twisted mind
Yeah, there lurks a black soulmate inside of his sick, twisted mind

Maybe it's an Oedipal thing: They want a woman who can yell back at them, "Yo' mama!"

Reminds me of one afternoon at a record collectors show. I asked a dealer if he could play a 45 rpm "Marijuana Polka", figuring it to be a novelty song about pot that I might want to buy. The dealer had several songs ahead of mine, so I wandered around the show. Suddenly he put on the record I picked, only it was the flip side "She Ran Off With Buck", one of the lines of which was "She'll never find a love like mine or bigger" which was soon followed by, "She ran off with a n...r". A couple hundred people froze in their tracks, only three people in the room were moving: the dealer, who was trying to grab the tone arm, the promoter, who was trying to stop the record, and me, who was rushing to buy the record before anyone else did. When I got it home and played the rest of the song, a red neck lament with some double entendre jokes, the singer, who had lost his lover to a Black man, cried "I never should have married that Black little [woman] anyway". Your song brings back memories. There are some human drives that precede or transcend race.

I noticed your mention of Strom Thurman's segregation spiel and his love child from his black housemaid, but she was also a TEENAGE "brown sugar" when she bore him a daughter. He paid his "brown sugar" hush money until she died and child support for their daughter for her entire life until he died. Then she came forth with the truth and she was already in her 60s and having been long married with her own family. Also, have you ever heard "KKK Bi*ch" by Body Count? Ice-T boasts about having kinky sex with a daughter of a Klan Grand Wizard! The first Body Count album is hilarious and meant to be a big nasty joke. Unfortunately some people took it much too seriously.
