The Lyrics

OK, so I'm showing my age in that I remember the Wombles... I can even sing pretty much all of The Wombling Song, too. But I do like thet mental image of the Wombles doing Motörhead covers- hell, Lemmy looks a bit like a Womble, doesn't he?
If you like the Wombles who come from Wimbledon
Underground, over-ground they are wombling free
They pick up every bit a' Wimbledon Common litter
But the one I want to see, the Womble that's for me is
Madame Cholet, Madame Cholet

Wellington's the bright one, staying in his lab
And Orinoco - he looks asleep to me
In the Womblegarten, Miss Adelaide's watching you
But the best in all the book, the only one to cook is
Madame Cholet, Madame Cholet

But no womble is scarier than Great Uncle Bulgaria
So pick up all that litter, wombles
Take it off to Tobermory
And Bungo is the joker!

Other Wombles: Stepney, Alderney and Shansi
Perth and Botany - reckon they're from Oz
Chairman Womble Wong - what's this, a Womble Tong?
But the only one I see, the only one for me is
Madame Cholet, Madame Cholet
OK, so I left out "Tomsk"... what rhymes with "Tomsk" anyway?

PS... I know the original is actually entitled just "Ace of Spades", but then I'd get some pedant complaining that "Madame Cholet" has more syllables, and the chorus words *are* "The Ace of Spades". If you see what I mean...

I know what you mean, Alex - most of them are conceived and by and large written while I'm driving: I spend up to a couple of hours a day in the car listening to music, so there's loads of time for it. Downside is that I find it almost impossible to listen to songs now without analysing (and usually criticising) the original lyrics, and trying to think up alternative versions...

This one came about from the first line only: "If you like to gamble..." - as soon as "If you like the Wombles" popped into my head, I simply had to write it.

You don't know the Wombles? That's what I call having a deprived childhood. It's children's TV from when I was growing up - have a look here: http://www.toonhound.com/wombles.htm

Just idlely (sp?) looking through old parodies to spot any classics I missed. Love this parody. Could imagine Lemmy singing it! Just one question who are the Wombles in the last verse? I'm sure they're from the new version! You missed out the Scottish clan and the American Womble, what was his name?

I know, Karen - I found a website which listed them all, quite a few had to be left out, but there were some I'd not heard of, too. I tried to get in all the major characters, though. Except Tomsk. Well, I tried to get him in, too... but failed.
