The Lyrics

I originally wrote this out of seriousness because I didn't feel the issue was receiving due attention considering (a) the amount of peer pressure today's youth encounter and (b) that older people often act ashamed when conversations turn toward sexual issues if they haven't had at least one intimate encounter. I submitted it to a couple of churches via e-mail and encouraged them to pass it along to anyone who could put it to good use, and after doing what I considered sufficient research, I have no reason to believe that the poem/song has reached significantly many people. Submitting it here may be the answer.
Examination of the heart and soul
And knowledge of the self
Are the products of a thoughtful mind
And a source of inner wealth.

I believe that out there somewhere
Is the person just for me,
And I'll wait 'til matrimony
Before my passions all run free,

And I'm proud to declare my virginity,
For at least I know I'm pure,
And I won't give into carnal lust
Or eroticism's lure

And we'll finally make love all night long
After wedding bells that day,
But until "I do," I say to you,
To be a virgin is okay.

Some would say that it's pragmatic
With disease and pregnancy,
But in the absence of the issues,
I'd still want the one for me.

I'll honor, love and cherish
The one who takes the vow to stay,
And until we consummate our love
I boldly stand and say

That I'm proud to declare my virginity,
For at least I know I'm pure,
And I won't give into carnal lust
Or eroticism's lure

And we'll finally make love all night long
After wedding bells that day,
But until "I do," I say to you,
To be a virgin is okay.

In retrospect, "until 'I do'" might have done better as "until we do" since it would take exaggerated histrionics to make, say, the congregation in a church realize that "I do" referred to the marriage vow.Visit me at Joseph Andrew's Page
