About a year ago, Michael Pacholek started a brief craze for retelling the classic story of the 1975 sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald to the tunes of other songwriters. I figured I would mark this significant anniversary with another contribution to the genre.
Sailing on a freighter was my sweet childhood dream
I'd think about it every single night
Though raised on land, I had it planned
When I became of age
Left home knowin' just what I would do
Ed Fitzgerald, let me sail away on you
Ed Fitzgerald, I'm no runaway
Please let me join your crew, I'll show you what I can do
Ed Fitzgerald, wanna sail away, sail away on you
Looking back a lifetime to my first day aboard
I wonder how I made it all these years
It's the way I've earned a living
I'm completely satisfied
Though knowing I left Mama home in tears
Ed Fitzgerald, I loved you almost like a dame
