Original Performer:

Bruce Hornsby and the Range

Parody Song Title:

"The Way It Is(the Song About How Rap Stars Wreck Good Songs By Sampling Them)"

Parody Written by:

Mikey F

The Lyrics

Of course, I picked this song because it was infact sampled by Tupac forever wrecking it for the rap generation
Standing in line, record time
buying Led Zepp and Sublime
'cause their songs are good
Then on the speakers playing high
is this rap star's version of "My guy"
I am pissed, I yell, this is wrong!

but thats just the way it is
Rap stars cant write for wage
thats just the way it is
They sure do decieve us

Say, hey rappin' boy, that songs been done
by a classic band
but they dont sound like you do
Say hey old band, how can you stand
their ripping ways
Did you think about it before you wrote the rules

but thats just the way it is
Rap stars cant write for wage
thats just the way it is
They sure do decieve us

Well they passed a law in '84
saying that lyrics can mean more
but they pushed it out too far
'cause the law dont change a rapper's mind
when he decides to steel a ryme
Why cant you think about this more

but thats just the way it is
Rap stars cant write for wage
thats just the way it is
They sure do decieve us

"Everything that's out now is just redone from the Sixties and Seventies. What's gonna happen when we get to the year 2000, and all they're doing is sampling from the Eighties and Nineties? It'll be the same thing over and over again." -- Dr. Dre, 1993, who, sadly, was right then and is right now...It's a copy of a copy, and if you've ever recopied a document or a videotape ten times, you know what I mean, and what he means. But that's just the way it is. Some people never change.

There is a lot of shocking pilfering that goes on, but it's not all bad. Personally I thought the Bruce Hornsby original was terrible and the Tupac song meant an awful lot more being as it was based on his own personal experience.

You are so wrong! What kinda songs do u like Justin, britney i dont think so. Tupac R.I.P so much pain! Tupacs version = 100% better!
Mike Florio - April 27, 2003 - Report this comment
Big bad booty man, um...you do know that there are more types of music....and a type known as rock, which I do listen to, and just letting you know, Id much rather listen to rap than "Justin and Britney" And I like the origional ROCK songs that your rap idols sampled and stole in the first place, which was the obvious purpose of the song! And Tupac's versian is 100% better than what? My parody, which isnt of his song, or the song I parodied, which you wouldnt know thinking that Rap and Pop are the only two kinds of music....

I don't know the Bruce Hornsby song or the Tupac version, but I gave this all 5's because I am also so sick of sampling. If that's all it takes to be a major recording act, then hell, sign me up. I could pick out a few songs and say, "OK, put this in there, and I'll write some lyrics that sound real meaningful. And then I can have a pop hit!" Thank you Michael Florio for writing this parody.

I sed that 2pacs version woz 100% better than Bruce Hornsby - his origninal version sucks! 2Pac made it much better by sampling it. Tu pac r.i.p P.s Rock is crap!

BBBM, In my opinion, when Tupac sampled that song, he wrecked it forever. For example, I have a friend who likes weird types of music, he likes everthing from Ludacris to Avril Lavigne to ACDC, and any way, I was playing the Bruce Hornsby and the Range song, and he recognized the intro, then imediately dismissed it when Bruce started singing, because he idolized Tupac's version before hand. And now what Emenem has done with Dream on by Aerosmith, will just do the same thing again. When a rap star samples a song, he wrecks it for good, for people like my friend, who couldve liked the song, but dismissed it because it wasnt the version he knew. Thats why I feel that Rappers wreck songs by sampling them...And judging by your end comment, I can see youre a rap fan, so to you Tupac's version could be better, but to other's, they dont even get a chance to see the difference.

I think its funny when, we all most know that there's nothing new under the sun. Not to mention how, not only music, but fashion trends, are copied and some poorly I might add. I hope you did something on Michael B. doing remakes of Motown hits. Most great band and singers where influenced by other people, copied. Like I stated I hope you have taking the time to make fun of all the people who have copied black artists for so many years. So as far as I am concern, Tupac did a better job doing a remix, then Michael B. A for average. It's nice to know that you realize your opinion is not worth more than anyone elses.

If the remake is done by a respectable artist after being giving permission by the original artist then what's the problem? A cover 'ruins' the original? What kind of music fan lets a cover ruin the love he/she had for the original? Kid Rock could do his own lousy version of "Detroit Rock City" and I'd still love the original. I don't care if anyone else doesn't know the truth, I'm the fan doing the listening. If anything, covers make sure the original isn't forgotten.
Truth - February 19, 2005 - Report this comment
Ignorant motherfucker. DJ's who play electronic music sample all the time. Does that ruin the integrity of the song? And what about covers of classic songs? Does that do the same? How is it any different? The music is still there.

I LOVE rock! Not only cause it's 'cool', but cause I like the sound of it, don't discriminate. At least it ain't girl bands with clown-faces and little high-pitched fake-voices! Oh, and 555! =) I REALLY HATE sampling songs! I wish them 'rap stars' would learn how to write...

Come on now, the pacing isn't that bad! I can understand if you vote 1 for how funny and overall just because you don't like it, but to vote 1 for pacing is way too abrasive.

The funny thing is, that sample was used for that song after Tupac had died, so you should be blaming the producer who did that if you're going to blame anyone, you're full of misinformation and ignorence. Rap is poetry, and does take quite alot of talent to produce decent lyrics, and to get the flow right, to match the beat, is quite hard, especially if you're improvising i.e. freestyling. I don't think sampling ruins songs all the time, but in this case, the original is far better, because of the sheer talent you can hear when listening to the piano playing. I don't think the singing was very good, it was ok, you could feel the emotion, but it could have been better. If you like the original, as other people have said, why should it bother you so much that people sample songs? Why do you care that other people like a cover of a song? I can understand if people think the person that did the cover actually made the song, let people think that, are you expecting a medal for knowing who actually made a song? Oh and I heard the version with the Tupac acapella first.

I just happened to see this - it was at the top of the "Latest Comments" thread...which means the next time the thread was updated it would no longer appear and I would have missed out on this exceptional parody. Great job, Michael! 5's...Coincidentally, I listened to this song a number of times over the weekend - it was probably the first time in maybe 2 or 3 years I had played it...it's on one of my old cassette tapes and I was recording vocal overlays of a lot of the songs on it (it's a hobby I have). Again, wonderful job ~ ~ ~

i understand that people get offended by sampling, but u got understand alot of people like myself dont have money for musical instruments,so u think ur best investment is to get turntables to loop up samples ,like i dont knoe any people who play instruments, and im an mc,so wat do i do,plus we r paying homage, old artist should feel good we even listen to old music, dont get me wrong,i get pissed off wen kanye west gets grammys anr is regardede as the best wen he cant make one beat by his self, but hiphop is hiphop, and wasnt system of the down that did shame on a nigga by ol dirty bastard, peace,GOD bless

There's difference between cover and sample.
