The Lyrics

In 2006, veteran U.K. punker Billy Idol released a Christmas album (if you don't believe me, google it). A surprisingly straightforward affair, I was shocked and disappointed that he didn't a perform a song such as the one below. (Note: this is based on the album version, not usually heard, with an extra verse.)
Hey little children, what do you want?
Hey little children, watch for Santa Claus!
Hey little children, he's the jolly one!
Hey little children, what's the gift you want?
Let's string the tree with popcorn!

Seems to be that time again
It's a nice time for a white Christmas
It seems like that time again

Hey little children, what's your special wish?
Hey little children, it's December 25th
Hey little children, snow day (oh yeah)
Be you pagan, Jew or Christian
Play in the snow--so fun!

Seems to be that time again (fa-la)
Looks like time for a white Christmas
It's holiday time once again!

Wrap it up!
Santa's comin' home, yeah!

Hey little children on vacation
Hey little children ages 2 to 101 (101, 101, 101)
We stay up late for so long (so long)
Santa Claus is late (how long?)
Just ring the bells now, ding-dong!

Seems to be that time again (fa-la)
Looks like time for a white Christmas
It's holiday time once again!

There's not but joy in the world
There's not but peace in the world
And we're singin' "Joy To the World"
And hope for all boys and girls
They all hope for joy ito the world--
Once again!

Seems to be that time again
It's a nice time for a white Christmas
It seems like that time again

Seems to be that time again (fa-la)
Looks like time for a white Christmas
It's holiday time once again!

This is great! Billy Idol is a favorite of mine, and I quite enjoy the OS, and this is very clever. Can't believe I didn't think of this one myself! Haha...now, I'm off to Google that Christmas album you spoke of...

Like Chris, I can't believe this idea hasn't been done before - seems such an obvious sub. And beautifully executed, too :-)
Matthias - December 07, 2006 - Report this comment
I also can't believe that this hasn't been done, but now it has been done, and so well done too, I loved all the subs for "There's nothing safe in this world", as well as, "Hey little children ages 2 to 101" Is somebody 101 still considered a child?
Agrimorfee - December 07, 2006 - Report this comment
Surely, Matthias, you recall the classic line "And so I'm offering this simple phrase/To kids from one to ninety-two..."? I updated the range to reflect current lifespan statistics. :)

great concept...i sang along

Especially fun to sing: "Let's string the tree with popcorn!"

Love it - you had my 555 as soon as I saw the title.
Ann Hammond - December 07, 2006 - Report this comment
I sang to this too

I started on this same concept a few years ago, but never wrapped it up. I'm glad you did, Aggro. It's lovely. "Popcorn" for "shotgun" is especially clever and hadn't occurred to me. I still have a killer idea for the guitar solo, so drop me a line when you get into the recording studio.

P.S. I had the same reaction when I heard there was a Billy Idol Christmas album - I was *sure* he was gonna inform us that it's a nice day for a white Christmas. But no.

Oh wow this just RULES! I second Cris,Phil and Spaff's comments and Matthias's! This rules! Iwish I thought of this. I always wanted to do a Billy Idol parody

SOTM - Billy Idol and White Christmas?!! Darn, I was sure there was gonna be a cocain joke lined out in there somewhere when I saw the title. :-)

SOTM-Great

(SOTM) I had toyed around with the idea of doing this, but never actually bothered to write it. But I knew a parody like this would come sooner or later by somebody... if it hadn't already. This definitely belongs in my Top Ten. 555

SOTM-This song is not an easy song to parody. . .White Christmas to a Billy Idol song seems somehow sadistic:) Anyhow, good overall parody, so many Christmas parodies in this month's entries, but I guess that can be expected.
Cat - January 26, 2007 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Yeah, it's a great Christmasy song...but did anyone else catch the unintentional (I think) double entendre here?
"Santa Claus is late (how long?) Just ring the bells now, ding-dong!"
Or is it just me? =P Even if it was just me, I liked the way it underscored the rather innocent remainder of the parody!
bobpiecheese - January 26, 2007 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Thank you for providing the video, Agri, that's the first Billy Idol song I've actually heard! That I'm aware of anyway (and I don't count Al's parody of 'Mony Mony')...well done!

What's a white Christmas? Oh, I forgot, we used to have them in Illinois.......MM
Red Ant - January 27, 2007 - Report this comment
(SOTM) If Billy Idol himself wrote a parody of "White Wedding", it wouldn't be this good.
Johnny D - January 27, 2007 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Billy Idol does an awesome impression of Billy Idol, doesn't he?
Stuart McArthur - January 28, 2007 - Report this comment
(SOTM) I loved how you honoured all the nuances of the OS (which is a big fave of mine) Ag, such as 101, 101, 101 - and there can't ever be too many santa parodies - after all "he's the jolly one" - good stuff - 555
Kristof Robertson - January 29, 2007 - Report this comment
(SOTM) What a great idea to do a sweet little yuletide parody to this OS. I can almost picture Billy in a leather Santa suit singing this. Wonderful! 555

Cat: naughty! naughty!
Kristof: ditto the same!
Michael: Living in Chicago since 1989, haven't missed it at all!
Everyone: Thanks!

Call me oldfathioned, but I found it refreshing to just read a nice christmas parody that doesn't involve weapons and tazers. Refreshing, Agri. Thank you.

SOTM - Heh, I wonder what Irving Berlin, and everyone who's sung the "Christmas Song", would say about this. This redefines Jingle Bell ROCK.
Matthias - April 27, 2010 - Report this comment
The perfect Christmas song! Sadly we're just coming into the summer so Christmas is like 6 months away... But it's the spirit of Christmas that can last throughout the year especially with songs like this to encourage Christmas in our hearts.

(Artistry) Wonderful Christmas song, Agri!!!
Abbott Skelding - May 04, 2010 - Report this comment
Artistry- Great job! Nice Christmas song to a not-very Christmassy OS lol
Below Average Dave - May 04, 2010 - Report this comment
Guess I Should elaborate on my earlier comment. We are at the exact opposite time of the year, which took a bit from it, but the parody's only real flaw was the pacing was not very tight, I love the idea, and it's got some great lines and rhymes, the original is a fun crazy song, probably my favorite of his--it was good Agri, but your pacing didn't measure up to your normal veteran standards.
bobpiecheese - May 09, 2010 - Report this comment
(Artistry) Phew, it's been a while since I read this one last. Still a great parody, even if it's kinda not Christmas time now, who cares?

(Artistry) Even better the second time around.
