The Lyrics

I seem to have Christmas on my mind lately so I thought I'd dust off this little parody I wrote a few years back complaining about stores pushing the Christmas season on us earlier and earlier...
It's summertime,
Coming up on Labor Day.
In summertime
The winter seems to be far away.
But once the aisles are emptied
Of the swimsuits and beach toys,
All the months will be a blur till Christmastime.

So please beware.
Preyed on by sugarplums,
Your bills will climb
Before December ever comes.
When you near those picture windows,
You will be paralyzed by fear
That the merchandise they're showing's
For the closing of the year.
After months of endless jingling,
Silver bells will make you blue,
And you'll want to shove Saint Nick back up that flue!

Though there won't be snow outside until November here,
The stores are decked with phony trees and lights.
Each blink of Rudolph's nose
Makes irritation grow.
Don't they know it isn't even fall?

Here's to waiting until Thanksgiving's done.
Here's to thinking anticipation's fun.
Don't they know it isn't even fall?

It's absurd.
It's absurd.
It's absurd selling ornaments in August.
It's absurd selling ornaments in August.
It's absurd selling ornaments in August.
It's absurd selling ornaments in August.
It's absurd selling ornaments in August.
It's absurd selling ornaments in August.
It's absurd selling ornaments in August...

TTTBF (Too True To Be Funny; don't worry, I made up that acronym, and it hasn't caught on here - yet.) ... Would have preferred some clever and funny variations on the closing repetitions, but still, great concept, well executed, and right on target. Here's your Christmas gift in advance: 555

Thanks, P. Pete and TT! I made the mistake of going into Hallmark the other day; Christmas ornament city! Of course, I protest too much; in reality, I'm always ready to bust out the Christmas music before Halloween...

Yeah, I guess I could have done a bit more with those last lines. On the other hand, I kinda like the same thing over and over getting drummed into my head...

Regardless of the American references and terminology (fall, Labor Day, Thanksgiving) this really struck a chord, and was pretty darn funny. Fave line: "Preyed on by sugarplums"...and I'm now visualising Bono in full 80s mullet bellowing "And you'll want to shove Saint Nick back up that flue!"...great job. 555

Thanks, Kristof! Hehe, no Christmas would be quite complete without Bono yelling at me...
