The Lyrics

Super Bowl XLIV between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts was a great game. And because of the wardrobe malfunction of a past halftime show (among other reasons), the NFL decided to feature the rock legend from 50 years ago, The Who. The band gave a great energetic performance with pyrotechnics and lasers flashing on top of a domed, lighted stage, singing their great rock anthems of yesteryear (which incidentally are now being used for the theme to CBS's CSI shows -- the station that aired this years game). Unfortunately (as is common with other reunion acts), the sound quality wasn't quite what The Who gave us in their prime. So I wrote a parody to express my feelings about this half-time show: at first I was all excited about hearing them. But during the actual act, I felt slightly gypped for their off performance. And that is how the parody should be read, having the first verse and refrain being about my anticipation, while the later verses reflected my feelings after the actual show. Enjoy!
We'll be watching it on TV
With Bud Light at our feet
And the music that we worshiped would be sung
By the men that spurred us on
Rock legends, could do no wrong
It's decided that The Who would sing their songs

I'd tip my hat to the old generation
Watch the bowl with The Who's recitation
Smile and grin as they played all around me
Watch the ol' guitar play
Just like yesterday
And I'd got on my knees and prayed
We won't get fooled again

But halftime had to come
Should've known it all along
We were livid and ashamed from their fall
The Who might've looked the same
And their words still hadn't changed
But the music and their voices all were sour

And Townsend's hat added to my reaction
Had to gag at that putrefaction
Shook my head at the change all around me
Pete and Rodger tried to play
Just like yesterday
And I shook my fist and said
We just got fooled again!
Oh no!

They moved myself and the crowd outside
By the spectacle they had at halftime
Shot all the rockets and lights at the sky
For you know that their anthems will never die

Who Dat!

Yah!

There's a party on Bourbon Street
For the Colts they did defeat
And The Who's songs got replayed all the time
At the party on the left
Or the party on the right
It's the beers you drink that'll get you past this fright

A tip to that NFL commission
Halftime show for the next celebration
Think real hard 'bout the band that'll play for'ya
Get some good guitar play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
Ya don't get The Who again
Don't get The Who again!
No, no!

YYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Next year's coin toss
Vikes won't have a loss!

Oddly enough, the half-time show was the first time I could actually understand some of the words to those melodies. At least the Who were not lip synching. And any music goes better with fireworks. But, as you said, the first consideration on the part of the NFL was that these guys wouldn't suddenly drop their pants. Although about half the commercials featured guys running around in their underwear.

Cool parody. I thought they were pretty good, although not as good as they could've been. 555's

I thought they did good. Of course, it wasn't absolutely fantastic, but they weren't awful. Pete was embarrassing to watch, but Roger was great! Not bad looking for 65, and he was still a pretty good singer. 555

Thanks for your votes! I agree that I didn't think they were horrible, but just not as good as their prime. This was actually part of the reason why I didn't want the whole song to be about bashing them and why I did give them kudos during the bridge. I agree too that Rodger was actually very good, especially when he belted out some of those notes (like the Yah! in the original song of this parody).
