The Lyrics

If one believes everything one reads in the press, Tony Blair is keener to enter the Euro than Gordon Brown, who relies on his "five tests" for economic convergence to delay our entry to the Euro. After much tally-ho and brouhaha, the upshot of the latest analysis of the economic conditions is... we want to join the Euro, but not yet... and we're going to get the same timewasting investigations (the cabinet were given 1800 pages of economic analysis to read) each year until .... until who knows?
[Gordon:]
It's alarming
EU Meeting
Madness takes its toll
We've our own currency

[Tony:]
Not for very much longer.

[Gordon:]
I've got to keep control.
I remember splits on Europe
Sinking the Tories then
The same thing could hit me
And the upshot: we're stalling

[The Cabinet:]
Let's join the Euro - but when?
Let's join the Euro - but when?

[IDS:]
It's just a jump to the left.

[The Cabinet:]
But when the timing is right.

[IDS:]
With a hand from the Whips

[The Cabinet:]
We'll vote it in alright
But it's the public trust
That we are trying to gai-ai-ai-ai-ain
Let's join the Euro - but when?
Let's join the Euro - but when?

[Tony:]
All this testing, Gordon is stressing
Not depressing... no, not at all
We may see emergence of economic convergence
Well, maybe next year, so let's stall

[Gordon:]
With a bit of a wrist flick

[Tony:]
The subject's dismissed quick

[Gordon:]
And next year, it'll be the same

[Tony:]
You've ruled out selection

[Gordon:]
'Till after the election

[The Cabinet:]
Let's join the Euro - but when?
Let's join the Euro - but when?

[Margaret Beckett:]
Well I was standing in the commons just the other night
Charles Kennedy asking for a plebescite
A referendum, let the people choose
(But not right now, because for sure we'd lose)
He said the country's ready for a change.
But if the pound goes now, ain't coming back again

[The Cabinet:]
Let's join the Euro - but when?
Let's join the Euro - but when?

[IDS:]
It's just a jump to the left.

[The Cabinet:]
But when the timing is right.

[IDS:]
With a hand from the Whips

[The Cabinet:]
We'll vote it in alright
But it's the public trust
That we are trying to gai-ai-ai-ai-ain
Let's join the Euro - but when?
Let's join the Euro - but when?

Fantastic Phil! I can just see all the MPs dressed up for RHPS I'm sure TB is shivering with anticip..............ation of convergence

Thanks, Tao.. maybe the sequel should be "Sweet Convergence" (though from a referendum POV, "plebiscite" scans pretty well as a replacement for "Transvestite"). Have to admit, I can see Rory Bremner doing this...(in my dreams!)

Or should I say....(suspense-ful pause)... Dr von Philbo!! :-) Come to think of it, now that the Tories have elected Frank N Howard as leader, a Sweet Plebiscite sequel seems actually rather topical...
