The Lyrics

Here's another song where today's "youngsters" may not be familiar with the original. Too bad. It's a sweet, simple song, more pop (for the 70s) than country, really. What I had the most fun (and challenge) with is mirroring the original lyrics as closely as possible (shavin' - heaven/Shout it, Mama - Mountain Mama/Might seem lazy - Miner's lady/Gnarled and musty - dark and dusty/yes, today - yesterday/Glory road - country roads, and so forth). I changed the second line in each chorus, to change it up a bit. I try not to repeat lines in my parodies, even in the choruses, unless it serves the funny. Well, in my opinion anyway.
(artist: What Ever)

I was shavin’ in the mirror.
All that gray hair made it so much clearer:
Guess I’m old now, like they said I’d be.
Younger men take over; it’s the end for me.

Growin’ old, goin’ slow,
Wrinkled face, achin’ bones.
I can’t hear ya. Shout it, Mama.
Don’t you know – now I’m old.

Short-term memory’s gettin’ cloudy.
Might seem lazy,
Speak my mind TOO LOUDLY!!
Gnarled and musty, pain most all the time.
Fast asleep by noon; I fear the reason’s I’m...

Growin’ old, goin’ slow.
All my ways set in stone.
I can’t hear ya. Shout it, Mama.
Don’t you know – now I’m old.

I feel my joints,
Without warnin’, now they stall me.
It sub-tl-y reminds me
How my youth slipped away.
But I’ll try letting go,
Accept the hard reality
That I am old today. Yes, today!

Growin’ old, goin’ slow.
Those clichés ain’t no joke.
I can’t hear ya. Shout it, Mama.
Don’t you know – now I’m old.

Growin’ old, goin’ slow.
Day-t’-day’s touch-n’-go.
I can’t hear ya. Shout it, Mama.
Don’t you know – now I’m old.

Take me home now, glory road.
I’m so close now, ‘cause now I’m old!
Unfortunately, most of this song came from personal experience. Ow, my back!// Hey, CML, that's 10! Do I get my index now? Huh? Do I? B > )
