The Lyrics

This is Side B to "I Hate Eagles Songs" I really dont hate the Who. In fact, I put them in what I call the British Big 7 that revolutionized rock in the 60's and 70's .. which included such familiar names as The Dave Clark 5, Peter and Gordon, The Zombies, Gerry And The Pacemakers* Herman's Hermits and The Animals ...... But seriously folks, the first stanza deals with impact that the song, "Baba O'Riley" had on kids born in my birth year. It was literally our tribal song
"Dont fight to prove you're right" says The Who
We're wasted teens in that song that you do
We dont need forgiving, still we listen to you
Hey Jack, use your back, Happy Ones are near
When he sang "Dont Cry" always raised a tear
Im not getting maudlin, but to us Baba's dear

We sang your song every night and day
You took our minds and you drove the Stones away

We hate ourselves for loving Who
Cant break free from O'Riley its true
They play the Stones but we run back to you
Thats why we hate ourselves for loving Who

Cheap whore, on the floor beckons you
You know she thinking of throwing lovin at you
Im over being snobbish about the pop
Im listening to
Hey man, here's the plan; I'll treat you right
But first we need to be dancing "Le Freak" tonight
I wanna see this happen
But said "Forget It" out of pride

This happens every night and day
I want the chicks, but my tastes get in the way

I hate myself for loving Who
Cant get laid for the genius they shewed
I wanna funk, but I'm snobbish from you
That why I hate myself for loving Who

This happens to me every day
They took my mind and they drove Motown away

I hate myself for loving Who
Can't break free from those operas you do
They crank up Zep but I run back to you
That's why I hate myself for loving Who

*You do realize I'm joking, right?

To set the record straight, my British Big Five includes -- Beatles, Stones, Who, Zep and Queen. Already I can hear it: "Hey Ma-a-a-an! What about Floyd, Ma-a-a-a-a-a-a-an!!" Sorry, fellow Rock citizens, I just dont dig on Floyd. I'm stiff-necked that way

I wasn't there, but in my mind Queen peaked later than the others you mention - how about Bowie for number five?
CML - May 05, 2022 - Report this comment
No, not Bowie .. What about Eric Claption? Yeah, he'll do in a pinch. ...... Or maybe Gerry and The Pacemakers; because nothing captured the rebellious, rambunctious tenor of the time better than the the word "Pacemaker"

Love the Pacemakers comment, that gave me a good laugh.
