The Lyrics

I'm quite bothered by the so-called "Religious Right" these days. So here's what I think...BTW - this OS is the final track on Tull's excellent "Aqualung" album from around 1970...
If your day comes
You would have me act the Fool
Impose your God on me; that's really lame
You can believe what you want; I could care less
But don't impose on me; that is not cool

So take this as a warning
Keep your God – just keep Him to yourself
Don't try to force me to abide your rules

If you do you'll face aggression
For my Temper you've now riled
Yeah, infringe on me; they'll be some Hell you will pay

So mind your own business, bastard
If you butt in mine; Beware
That day you'll rue; on this I do so swear

Is that clear to you?
You can believe just as you want
But don't attempt to shove your God in my face

Your nonsense riles and aggravates me
You would treat me like a fool
You can believe just what you want; but I decline

[instrumental break]

Do not try to tell me
How my life should be run
I do not give a Rat's Ass for your rules
Your blather does confound me
Quite frankly, I think you're wrong
If asked, my honest answer is, "You're Fools"

If you jaw drops now, I'm sorry
But you've pushed me too far, man
I am sick of your attempts
I hope that's clear
{Is that clear?}

[instrumental break]

This sh*t's so dumb
I will not accept your rules
You ought to know I just won't play that game
Keep this in mind; I think you're hypocrites
You've pushed too far; well, I can push back, too

So perhaps by now it's dawning
You mess with me, you risk harm
Chew on that a while; should go well with your gruel

[instrumental jam]

There's only so much aggravation
I will take from such as you
Do not preach to me "Intelligent Design"

[pace slows way back down to just a solemn piano]

I'm not quite done
Have another point or two
Your pushy condescension does enrage
Now you may find there's a cost to your excess {Yes}
You've pled your case, here's what I say to you

Step back from me, you bastards
Then hear this thought I share
You've crossed my line, so you'd best now beware

All your repressiveness annoys m e
You should know that isn't cool
And if this continues you will feel my ire

{Best mind your business}
{If you do we'll get along}
{Then have a nice day in your Church}
{On Sunday}

I read it instead of playing the music..and I must say I have to agree. I detest people asking me if I've been 'saved'. Who knows? Certainly they don't. One point..it's not all religious right that shoves religion in your face....could be anybody.

Good parody, Paul.

Oh, absolutely, Pat...I'm only referring to the element whose own personal business is so well attended and smooth that they think they have time to run mine too...Thanks!

Powerful POV parody.... ironically, your work provides strong evidence in favor of "Intelligent Design!"

"I'm only referring to the element whose own personal business is so well attended and smooth that they think they have time to run mine too..." lol I'd like to meet those people who think that. Er...on 2nd thought, maybe not.

I wouldn't have it any other way. I have my belief and others have theirs. This is a beautiful work

alvin, tjc - Thanks! TJC - surely you are being facetious. "Intelligent Design" is a joke, and not a very good one. It is a "theory" that rests on a foundation that is solely based on faith. Faith can be a wonderful thing...but it's something you "feel" or "believe" but cannot really KNOW in a demonstrable way. You may SAY you know...but you cannot provide tangible proof. That, my friend is not "knowing"- it is "believing". People often confuse "believing" with "knowing" as they also confuse "opinion" with "fact". And, yes, you can tell me this is just my "opinion"...but only as a distraction from your inability to "prove" the original theory. As I said in the piece, folks who want to play the fool can dance to that tune, but I'll sit that one out. They are welcome to believe what they want to believe, just keep it out of our schools and our science. Arrgghhh...Hell, you were probably just being facetious, but I'm tired of yahoo's trying to substitute re-constituted Biblical texts that were translated CENTURIES after the original fact for Science, which subjects it's theory to Trial & Error methodology...yes, there are errors in scientific theories...and when they are proven the theory is corrected to reflect what we NOW know. Scientific knowledge has the flexibility to potentially move us into a better future (not guaranteed). Basing our Country's policies on...sorry here if I step on any toes..."Pie in the Sky"...an unchanging Sky-Pie at that...is...well....just freaking stupid...Thank you...OH...WAIT...Jeez, I'm on such a roll...Why Stop? Didja know that Jeesus did NOT speak English? Toss that around in your brain the next time someone wants to govern "by the Bible".

Great stuff Paul...and you seem to have garnered a lot of support for your words. Add another person to the list...I'm tired of being told I'm going to hell every other week. 555

Thanks, Kristof...well, I figured I couldn't be the only one totally tired of this crap. I mean it shouldn't be so hard to figure out that "Freedom OF Religion" should also include the right to "Freedom FROM Religion" should one so choose. But the absolutists won't hear it and hard as I try to stifle the impulse sometimes I just can't help trying to use logic with these people.

Just caught this when searching for something else: couldn't agree more. Very much in keeping with the spirit of the OS, too (which is one of my favourite Tull songs, if not one of my favourite songs, period). Nil carborundum illegitimi, as they say :-)

Well, it's 10 months later, but I just caught your comment, Phil. Thanks ~ ~ ~
