The Lyrics

Our nation was afraid -
We were terrified
A tyrant threatened us with not just death,
but genocide!
But then our nation stood to fight
With the sisu through the plight
And we were saved
And defended our birthright

Yes, we’re still here
in furthest North!
And our living standard's higher
than it's ever been before
We still light candles on 6th December
we still feast Midsummer Day
we live in peace and freedom
we don't care if you're straight or gay -

We all still eat
the black rye bread
And our concept of the sour and sweet
is the salmiakki, yeah!
We love to play ice hockey
we love to ski and skate
we love to sing and play guitar
we love our Northern state -

Yes, we’re still here
We are alive!
And as long as there’s two Finns to love
Our people will survive -
We’ve got sisu, we’ve got heart
We love nature and we’re smart!
We will survive! We will survive!
We will survive!
Hey, hey!

First came Vikings, tried to plunder us
they failed to succeed -
then the Swedish kings our conquered land
and taxed with greed
We lived so many years
feeling sorry for ourselves
oh how we starved
then came the Russians and their Czar -

In the last two thousand years, many have been lost
We have faced famines, bombings,
many wars and the cold and frost
And yet our nation has endured
As my presence here reveals
So it’s assured
We’ll have one thousand freedom years!

We like to hack
we like to code -
We're engineering nation
We'll innovate and do some more
We love to play the music
we love to sing and rock
we all defend our country
and we are tenacious stock

Yes, we’re still here
We are alive!
And as long as there’s two Finns to love
Our people will survive -
We’ve got sisu, we’ve got heart
We love nature and we’re smart!
We will survive! We will survive!
We will survive!

Yes, we’re still here!
We are alive!
And as long as there’s two Finns to love
Our people will survive
We’ve got sisu, we’ve got heart
Lots of engineers, we’re smart!
We will survive! We will survive!
We will survive!

This could be the new national anthem of Finland! That said, I was under the impression that Vikings lived on all the coasts of the Baltic Sea, including Finland. No? Also, something I came by yesterday after having already commented on you skydiving parody; flying finns are nothing new! ;-P

A bit long for a national anthem, unless we wanted to extend the Olympics by another day. But, a very fine display of patriotic feeling. And a good lesson in history as well.
