The Lyrics

Tribute to John on the anniversary of his death. Most Lennon fans will get the references, but one may have to be explained. Namely that John's killer was a Christian fundamentalist from the Georgia bible belt. This fact is usually swept under the rug for whatever reason.
Formed a skiffle band,
That you called the Quarrymen,
Paul and George became your friends,
With songs that sparked a worldwide youth culture,
Christians descended like vultures,
When you said, "We're bigger than Christ",
They forced you to apologize,
But a fundamentalist would take your life,

(Chorus)
23 years since, that bastard made the whole world wince,
I remember all the vigils then,
It's now December 8th again,
Nixon tried to deport you,
Because you spoke the truth.

(Verse 2)
Psychedelic Sixties Man,
Your musical dreams all came true,
To Rosemary's Baby's house you moved,
Then the Watergate guys tried to kick you out,
But their crimes came out,
Your lost weekend down in L.A.
Banging that hot chick named May
And then with Yoko Double Fantasy,

(Verse 3)
It was 1980, when you came back on the scene,
Starting Over was a massive hit,
And your tour plans were all set,
You made the world a better place,
'Til darkness fell one day,

(Chorus)
We wish you were still here,
Instead of Britney Spears,
Because music today is junk,
And it's been so long since that punk,
Took your life as bastards often do
But I could have told you, Lennon,
This world was made much better
By your music that was so cool.

It was a Monday night,
Heard it on the radio,
Went to the Central Park vigil,
200,000 folks that can't forget
That your songs were the best,
You were a working class hero,
You led the Beatles long ago,
When you thought rock'n'roll could change the world.

Now I think I know, the peace and love you tried to bring,
To a hostile world of war and pain,
And how you tried to set it free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will...

While John's killer may have been a "Christian fundamentalist" from the "Georgia Bible Belt", it is obvious that he was a whacko, and it doesn't follow that all "Christian fundamentalists" are whacko. I think he was a whacko way before he ever thought about any religion. Unfortunately for "Christian fundamentalists", he just picked their religion.. It could have easily been something else.

I saw this after I posted a note to Johnnie mentioning the "23" reference. Thanks for the tribute. The day after Lennon died, I stayed home from work and wrote a song in his style as a tribute. Or more accurately, it wrote itself. One of the lines was "Is God mad at you cause you told us the truth long ago..We'll remember the things that you told us you want us to know.." Sort of echoes what you said.

Poor Don Mclean. first i write up a version insulting his song, and then you club him with rocks. Yes i am a huge Beatles fan. No this doesnt fit the song Vincent at all. SO there are 3 criteria here, pacing, well thats not even close. Funny? this isnt a funy song. Overall score 0+0= 0
