Seen that Indy took back Champ Car
I saw the long division go
An open-wheel league closed its doors for good
They all kissed and made up
And should have long ago
They nixed the whole 2K8 season
And packs of teams just up and died
Some think this turn is good
And others really would
Say that the logic here is fried

So now the IRL's got Champ car
I saw the ruins at my feet
You know we almost didn't notice it
Though Autoweek said they filed for bankruptcy
They ditched the F1-style Panoz cars
It's IRL-spec they'll all use
2008 was gone
But we know who'd have won
Because Bourdais can never lose

So now the IRL's got Champ Car
And Road America might leave
Which is, to me, a disappointing thing
'Cuz IndyCar was just
NASCAR with open wheels
They'll prob'ly drop a lot of street tracks
'Cuz Champ Car still is in the red
They dropped the Cleveland run
The Portland race is gone
And Houston's just been left for dead

Now we all wave goodbye to Champ Car
Which lived for almost forty years
Its start with Indy and the Sports Car Club
Its very first cup was taken by Rick Mears
I'm not sure if it will succeed in
Keeping the sport's int'rest alive
The risks to open-wheel
Inside the 'States are real
The merger's so the breed survives...
