The Lyrics

On stage I gave them shivers
When they heard me give 'em the gong
I hear them cursing and crying whenever
They had music and they sang it wrong

I strike the gong
That stops the singers cold
I strike the gong
When how they sing it gets old
I strike the gong
That makes the losers whine
I strike the gong
I strike the gong

Their routine's bland and boring
And if I were Santa they'd get coal
But still they're looking so surprised
I'm gonging them cause it's getting pretty old

I strike the gong
When their delivery's whack!
I strike the gong
It means they ain't coming back
I strike the gong
That brings the most applause
I strike the gong
I strike the gong

When the music's going south
You hope the gong soon will shut their mouth
You might call it crowd control
When they all boo
Singing's getting worse
You plug your ears
Still need a nurse
It saves me
It saves you
When they boo
That's my cue
It's an ear emergency!

I strike the gong
Wanna-be divas blush
I strike the gong
Half drunken comic bombs hush
I strike the gong
Silly soliloquy's sigh
I strike the gong
I strike the gong

I strike the gong
When their recital's foul
I strike the gong
When neighbor dogs would howl
I strike the gong
It means they've lost appeal
I strike the gong
I strike the gong

I can't stand it
So I strike the gong

A fitting tribute to Jaye P. Morgan

I just wish I could have a chance to gong Manilow. One of the many reasons "Cats" is my most hated musical _ever_ is because so much of its music is so Manilowesquely mewling -- a real bottoming out for downhill-ever-since-Superstar Webber/Rice. That in mind, this 5s-worthy parody really ... er rings true. :-)

Ohhh, it looks like some Fanilow was offended. You have a good "Memory" (sic) where The Gong show and Manilow are concerned - I think they share the same year. However, I don't see any connection between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Manilow. I don't understand the Maniphobes and their intense hatred. Cats was one of the best musicals I have seen. By the way, I knew somebody who went on the Gong Show in 1976. I couldn't bear to watch it, so I didn't find out if she got gonged.

2Eagle - re WebberManilow, one word: "Memories." It's the ulimate non-Manilow Manilow mewl. I guess we'll agree to disagree re "Cats" (whose own title I think anagrams to a perfect assessment: "Scat.") :-)
Anyway, re "Memories," specifically, it never had a chance after a particular performance I witnessed. When My daughter was about 5-6, she was member of a local kids' chorus (populated entirely by her age-mates) whose otherwise sane director incomprehensibly included that utterly age-inappropriate piece in their recital performance. One of the singers--a thoroughly unpleasant little 5-year-old we happened to know in several other contexts--stood front row center with his hand down his pants playing with himself throughout the song. It was really more funny than disgusting, but the audiovisual image has proved unshakable, and made it impossible to take an already unlovable song seriously. :-)

Thanks for the comments. It is a show worthy of remembering.

Ah yes - I remember the show. There were some really dumb acts on that show as I recall. The Emcee was Chuck im-Barris and he did a great job of ripping up the bad acts like acting all serious and asking one of the judges like Arte Johnson or Jamie Farr why they gonged a really bad act. Barris was extremely well versed at adding insult upon injury. Somehow that bit done by Barris never got old with me. It was the icing on the cake after a gonging. I loved the show and I like this parody. It's fresh and original and as for Cats and Manilow I agree with Stan. Fine write, Tim. No gongs on this one, just 5s.

1. Manilow is a fine performer. 2. Cats is a fine musical, with a lot more going for it than 'Memory' itself. 3.Oingo Boingo made their first national appearance on The Gong Show, and won the prize that day. 4.Ever see the crappy Gong Show Movie? 5.Fine tribute, 555

I remembered "The Gong Show" like yesterday. It's a very funny show, but this is one song that I would NEVER gong in a million years. I love the OS, next to Copacabana. I also enjoyed Dave Attell's version of The Gong Show. Just like Agri says, it's a fine tribute. Very routine and organized lyrics. I enjoyed it a whole lot, Tim Mayfield! 555.
