The Lyrics

Well, those of you who weren't around in the early '70's probably won't know what I'm talking about, but Sonny & Cher Bono had one of the most popular shows on Televsion for several years, starting in 1971. And it WAS a pretty entertaining show. It was silly, of course, but it was fun. They bantered back in forth at the beginning of each show - did some crazy comedy skits, performed some musical numbers...and had some very talented regular performers and Special Guests. But things weren't going well between them and they broke up...end of show. Not taking sides here, she claims he was a tyrant and he's not around to answer...Sonny Bono died in a freak skiing accident some time ago, as I recall. FYI - This OS is the opening track on the Zombies fine "Odessey and the Oracle" album from the mid-sixties. Lyrics that are {bracketed} are sung in place of "aahs", "bahs", "la's", etc.
[brief piano intro]

My, the time flew
it's gone so fast, your head spins, lady
thinking of you back in those
TV days

singing away
with Sonny, man, that was a gas
that was the best, yeah
those sure were the days

TV had tubes
we watched you almost
every Sunday
wonderful songs; we sang along
and swayed
laughed and we giggled at the funny
skits you both did
but then you both broke up
your show went away

{was...a...bum...trip...}
{It was for sure...}
{A...bum...trip...}

Gone for good
it made us glum...
boo-hoo

It didn't feel good when you came
back without Sonny
Not as much laughs, it
did not make us smile

Turned off the TV
comedy skits were not funny
sh*t seemed made-up
and it just seemed so trite

{not...too...cool...}
{no, it was not}
{folks...not...fooled...}

Not as good
missed Sonny's smile, too

We liked the way you joked and fought
it used to make us smile
All of that corny stuff we bought
we did not turn the dial

Sonny's been gone for quite some time
that saddens me
sometimes an assh*le
still seemed a nice guy

After his death I
cannot say that I did grieve then
Still, miss that schlub
he sure had a great smile

{miss...that...schlub}
{sure miss that schlub's}
{smil..ing...mug}

Miss that putz
That funny buffoon

{waah...waah...waah...waah}
{waah...waah...waah...waah...waah}
{waah...waah...waah...waah}
{waah...waah...waah...waah...waah}

If I could
I'd bring back that loon

{Miss...that...loon..}.
{He was cool-ool}

{bum...bling}
{Sonny, miss that bum}
{sure do miss}
{miss that bum}

{He's long gone...}
{So's this son-on-ong...}

Pat, yeah - Sonny's personna, at least on that TV show, was that of "schell-lubrity". MasonR - Glad you liked it! And glad you know the OS, too. It's a cool song...certainly a novel story-line...I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like it - never would have thought of the idea...unless, I suppose, I'd ever had a girl friend in jail and just about to get out it might. Thanks to you both!

Hey Paul, FYI there's an amazing cover version of the OS by Matthew Sweet and Suzanna Hoffs (of the Bangles) in their CD "Under the Covers". They rescued this wierd gem from obscurity.

MasonR - Thanks! That's very interesting - and kinda cool, too. BTW - I have more parodies of the Zombies "Odessey & Oracle" coming up...they're written, I didn't get around to posting one last night, but you see more in the upcoming days. They were a lot of fun to write stuff to and I think I got some good stuff out of it.
