Song Parodies -> "Wisconsin Dells"

Original Song Title:

"Washington Square"

Original Performer:

The Village Stompers

Parody Song Title:

"Wisconsin Dells"

The Lyrics

The song under parody here was an instrumental hit of late 1962/early 1963 vintage. Its Russian-sounding melody was no accident: "Washington Square" was based on an obscure Russian folk song. (Note the reference to the Australian slogan promoting awareness of skin cancer prevention, as in SLIP on light cotton clothes, SLOP on high-SPF sunscreens and SLAP on a wide-brimmed hat.)
Now, let me recommend to you
A resort you could use,
'Cause who needs the vidiot's lantern of
Diogenes come summertime?

Just why do you want to visit down
Orlando/Disney World way,
When it's quite expensive and overdone
Characters you've seen to death?
I'd be the first to recommend,
If value for money's your thing,
To recommend Wisconsin Dells
As worthwhile alternative....

Or, for that matter, Branson, Missouri,
And the so-called "music shows" there--
Nothing but thinly-veiled propaganda
Of the jingoistic sort?
Your mind's a terrible thing to waste;
It probably needs a little fun,
So may I recommend Wisconsin Dells
For fun most nutritious instead....

The Waterslide Capital of the World
Is Wisconsin Dells' claim to fame--
Waterpark equivalent of Cedar Point
And Six Flags Magic Mountain, too--
Be sure to bring some beachwear along,
And don't forget the sunblock, too,
Perhaps some aloe vera gel;
As the Aussies say: "Slip, Slop, Slap!"

Now, let me recommend to you
A resort you could use,
'Cause who needs the vidiot's lantern of
Diogenes come summertime?
