The song under parody here was an instrumental hit of late 1962/early 1963 vintage. Its Russian-sounding melody was no accident: "Washington Square" was based on an obscure Russian folk song. (Note the reference to the Australian slogan promoting awareness of skin cancer prevention, as in SLIP on light cotton clothes, SLOP on high-SPF sunscreens and SLAP on a wide-brimmed hat.)
