"Are You Naive 'Round Gadgets?"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Are you naïve "round gadgets?
Can't make your PC start?
Your modem and printer
Are falling apart?
And those gadgets that sure make you go loopy
You tried to fill your pool, now it's all soupy
You buy "The Guide To Gadgets" work on game console
They should mark you with sign "Danger"
Turned your house to co-oa-oal

Cause you're naïve "round gadgets
Don't pick up that fuse
Nor that plug, man, drop it
With vans for the news
It's just their mission to put your life on file
Cause you'll blow off your face, with your BBQ light
TV starts snapping and you just lose your mind
Try to repair; you'll just blow mankind

Cause you're naïve "round gadgets
Drop those prongs, I plea
Advancing my warning might just do the key
Your saying "I can fix those" yeah right
I'll meet you in Heaven, or Hell if you like
It needs no enhancing, baby, can't you see
That those gadgets will refuse it
Cause they're fine, peachy keen!!!!

Yeah, you're so naïve "round gadgets
Yeah, naïve with those gadgets, even fishing pole
Naïve with those gadgets, like the cruise control
Naïve with those gadgets, they'll make you debris
Nooo, working with the gadgets

Are you naïve? You are naïve!
Are you naïve? You are naïve!
Are you naïve? You are naïve!
Are you naïve? You are naïve!
Are you naïve? You are naïve!

Really funny, Matthias. It's a clever idea and well done...Except - pace-wise you had a few rough spots...and honestly, I would have gone "5" there anyway...Except - the 1st "bad spot" was on the 2nd line and that's not good. OS line is: "In a young girl's heart" - 5 clear syllables...you've got "Can't make your PC start?" and that just doesn't sing well at all...choppy - you've got to scrunch "P" and "C" together...no way around it. And you could have gone, "Your PC won't start"...5 syllables - sings nicely with the OS line. It's just a matter of changing around the word ordering in different ways to see if you can make it fit. So, "4-5-5" here. The other pacings quibbles were no big thing really, but that one I had to ding you on.

Funny funny funny!! I loved the blowing off my face with the BBQ light bit...because I always freak out whenever I light the old grill!

Just to add, inspite of my pacing criticism this IS one of my favorites today, too. If I could have given you a "6" for "Funny" I would have ~ ~ ~

5s, and remember Clarke's Corollary: Any gadget sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic!

Agree with Paul about the pacing. Otherwise...this is magically funny!

nice one, Matthias, and a nod for that cruise control thing - it nearly killed me a couple of times last week - 555

Great idea and title. "Can't make your PC start?" worked for me; I just sang "can't" a bit before I normally would have sung "in". Those grill igniters always break on me, so I use a lighter - a long-neck grill lighter. 5s.
Paul Robinson - June 26, 2006 - Report this comment
Red...Naw, It's STILL choppy even when you do that...to me, anyway. Now, "make your P-C start" WOULD match up to "in a young girl's heart" but then it doesn't say the same thing. When you put "Can't" in front of it, well, to me it just doesn't flow at all close to the OS there. Am I being picky? Yes, but I'm gonna stay adamant on my position that the line could have easily been phrased to PERFECTLY match the OS. Sorry to muck up your thread, Matthias...but I can't resist parrying about pace when the subject is broached.

SOTM - When I first moved away from my parents I was so naive in the kitchen that I cooked my tea/chocolate/coffe water in the evening so that I would only have to reheat it in the morning, so I can relate that way! :-)

(SOTM) see above - yep, gadgets can kill you alright - just check out the Darwin Awards - this reminds me of the joke about the parachutist whose chute wouldn't open. As he's falling to earth, he sees another bloke heading towards him from the other direction...."Hey, mate" he says, as they pass each other, "do you know anything about parachutes?" "No!" says the other bloke "Do you know anything about gas barbecues?" - 555
Red Ant - July 29, 2006 - Report this comment
(SOTM) See above, and I stand by my previous position on the pacing, which is more or less perfect (and with a lot of internal and end-line rhymes). Definitely 5 worthy there, and the other 2 categories. I usually don't know that much about gadgets, which I why I disassemble nearly everything I buy - learning is fun, and occasionally expensive when I can't put something back together.

Thought I'd commented on this one, too: being kind of gadget-happy, I got this real sense of superiority reading this :-)

(Ages) How did i miss this one? Brilliant title carried through nicely. I don't have a pacing quibble, but my quibble is how you sacrifice English syntax to fit your parody ("They should mark you with [a]sign [labeled] 'Danger'", "they'll make you [into]debris",and especially "you'll just blow [up]mankind", which when taken out of context sounds downright kinky. :)
