The Lyrics

I guess you've got to be a Josh Groban fan to really appreciate this, but here goes. It's all about how Josh's career got started, and chronicles many of his successes to date. The "Fozman," "Foz" and David refer to David Foster, the producer who discovered Josh. "Hamsterballing" is Josh's phrase for singing in the glass booth in a recording studio, like being stuck in a cage. Warner is Warner Brothers Records. David and Brian are Josh's vocal coach and manager. CMU is Carnegie Mellon University, the school Josh attended when he was signed to a recording contract. "Malcolm Wyatt" is the geeky character Josh played on Ally McBeal. He got the role after Robert Downey Jr. was fired. David Kelly is the creater of Ally McBeal. Oprah Winfrey invited Josh to sing on her show after Oprah's best friend, Gayle King, told her about Josh's great voice. He performed with a scortching case of tonsilitis and went into the hospital right after the show. Pasadena is where Josh's first PBS special was filmed. The "Alley" refers to Shubert Alley, a term referring to the Broadway theatre district in NYC. Josh made his Broadway debut in Chess. Barbara Cook is a huge Broadway star and singer who is highly respected in the Broadway community. Josh himself said he was "scared shitless" about doing Broadway. He also hopes to one day appear on Sesame Street, lover of children that he is. Whew!!! Hope this helps. Enjoy!
The Ballad of Josh Winslow Groban

Chillin' in the theater department
High school courses, homecoming dance
The Foz calls to say, "I can show you the way
To become famous cuz you sing with romance"
Yikes, I know it ain't easy
But just how hard can it be?
The way things are goin', I'm gonna make mad money!

Singing at an inauguration
Wealthy people filling the seats
David Kelly's impressed, Downey - not at his best
They dream up "Malcolm Wyatt," king of the geeks
Yikes, I know it ain't easy
But just how hard can it be?
The way things are goin', I'm gonna be on Ally!

Finally get accepted to college
CMU is the place to be
But my profs are real pissed, David calls and I miss
So many classes that I get my first "D"
Yikes, I know it ain't easy
I see how hard it can be
The way things are goin', I may not get my degree

Saving all my pennies for a rainy day
"Clean your room," was all I ever heard
Oh, man I won't sit still 'til my first a hit
I'm gonna buy a condo in the sky, word!

Had to lay the law down to Foster
Sign me, or lay off my studies
Warner kicks out some cash, I break out in a rash
David & Brian become my best buddies
Yikes, you know it ain't be easy
You know how hard it can be
The way things are goin', I'll never see my homies

Standing in the glass booth at Foster's
Hamster balling 'til I can't speak
The orchestra rocks, but hey, please gimme some lox
How can I sing, you peeps have nothing to eat!
Yikes, you know it ain't easy
You know how hard it can be
The way things are goin', they're gonna call me skinny

CD hits the streets in November
Grobanites become my new fans
Oprah listened to Gayle, because she knows I can wail
My throat's on fire, man I've got swollen glands!
Yikes, you know it ain't easy
You know how hard it can be
The way things are goin', I'm gonna sport an IV

Saving all my royalties for a rainy day
Won't be wastin' cash like rockers do
Last night my Dad said, "you're using your head"
Keep records so the Taxman won't scare you, "Boo!"

Pasadena scores me some notice
PBS said it really cooked
Now we're planning a tour, met the Pope and I'm sure
I have his blessing cuz my schedule is booked
Yikes, you know it ain't easy
You know how hard it can be
The way things are goin', they're gonna deify me

Finally get to sing in the "Alley"
Chess is my debut, it was clear
That I wouldn't get rest, but Barbara Cook is impressed
I was scared shitless but it helped my career
Yikes, you know it ain't easy
You know how hard it can be
They way things are goin', I'm gonna win a Tony

Singing for the peeps across country
Going back and forth in a bus
Closer sales hit the top, "classical? opera? pop?"
Who gives a damn because they're eatin' my dust!
Yikes, you know it ain't easy
You know how hard it can be
The way things are goin', I'm gonna do MTV
Yeah, the way things are goin', I'll visit Rue Sesame!
