The law has finally been passed - based on a 2011 report saying parody in the UK (now there's another one to write) should have the same sort of "fair use" as you do in the States, no longer requiring parody writers to get approval from copyright holders before changing the words to a song. This isn't so much :-) as :-D with a lot of exclamation marks after it. Thank you Vince Cable; you took your time, though.

I'd take it that first sentence in the intro means you're thinking about writing "Parody in the UK" to The Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK"? Now that song could be used for another topic too, I seem to remember you have pretty good knowledge of germs and chemistry and biology and sh*t, hence you are probably one of the few parodists that could do anything serious with the title "Ebola in the UK" (or US) if there's another media panic down the road.

Not sure that I'll write it - parodies to Anarchy in the UK always seem a bit disjointed (like the original, really).. But I'm going to play this one at a gig tonight & will probably finish it off with a chorus from AitUK parodied :-) If you're thinking of an ebola parody, what about:

JJ - it was first raised in 2011 after a report recommended various changes, including parody to be given a similar "fair use" copyright exemption the way the US has; I don't think that's exactly what has been passed, but I've not read what actually says yet: they were talking about it on the Today Programme on R4 a couple of days ago, and there's been a couple of blog posts. I'm a bit surprised the BBC haven't done more with it, to be honest.
