"A Penny Dies"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Canada has begun to phase out its pennies as the cost of production exceeds its monetary value. The Royal Canadian Mint has stopped penny deliveries to all financial institutions. The coins will still be legal tender until they disappear from circulation. The cost was about $11 million per year. Canada joins New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and others in dropping the penny. Merchants have been instructed to round up prices to the nearest nickel while E-transactions are not affected. The US has proposed dropping the cent too which is made of zinc. But the US Treasury Dept. is thinking of just using cheaper materials. The American zinc lobby is of course a major opponent!
Costs did rise
Costs did rise

Not surprised
Not surprised

E-pays fine
Round up time
Use decline
Penny dies

Canada's mint halts line

[US zinc cent survives]

Some of the on-line survivalists are advising people to stock up on nickels, which are actually made mostly of copper, and worth more for their metal content than face value. Unlike cents, which were changed to mostly zinc in the late 1980's, the composition of the nickel has remained the same since 1866 except for four years in WWII when they were made partly of silver. A lot easier to sort.

Even gold in an apocalypse is worthless if it is irradiated and "HOT." Greatest wealth for trade as in Pat Frank's awesome book "Alas, Babylon" will be alcohol, coffee, salt, matches, tools, doctor tools, medicine, and batteries.

In James Wesley, Rawles "Patriots" series of survivalist novels, .22 ammo becomes a valuable currency. Harder to find now than silver or gold. One lady suggested stocking up on those little handi-wipe packets, salt and pepper single use packages from restaurant supply stores. Small bottles of liquor might make good trade material, too.

Rob - Somebody has to say it. I apologize in advance. Such a move would be cents-less. ;D
