The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was to be the new fuel-efficient airliner that would revolutionize the air industry with tech and innovation; instead, the entire fleet of 50 delivered thus far have been grounded and production stalled due to a series of fires breaking out from the lithium-ion batteries in the aircraft. So far, 3 incidents have led to the grounding to ensure air safety. Lithium-ion batteries were chosen as lightweight, more powerful batteries to boost the tech advances found in the Dreamliner. But they have proven a liability instead as they leak and start fires that cannot be put out quickly with water. The NTSB is investigating, which could take months or longer, costing Boeing revenue as well as possible cancellation of orders. Production is halted as well. In a statement recently, a NTSB spokesman said that perhaps overcharging was to blame.. but that it was too early to say for certain. In any event, not only the batteries will have to be removed and examined but the Dreamliner's entire electrical system and all electronics that control them. Bad news for such a promising aircraft (bet Airbus is smiling)! Lithium-ion batteries have caused fires with other tech as well: laptops, the Chevy Volt car, and a Navy submarine!!!
