The Kysushu J7W1 Shinden (Magnificent Lightning) was the eager replacement for the previous glory of the Mitsubishi Zero. It was conceived in 1943 and the flight characteristics of the radical design were performed by Yokosuka MXY6 gliders. After these were sound, the Shinden filfilled the 18-Shi requirement and was advanced to the Kyushu factory and Nakajima Handa plant for production in 1944. A prototype was built in less than 10 months and flown on August 3, 1945. Two more test flights were performed in August while the second aircraft was built. The Shinden was an awesome sight. It featured a canard-pusher layout with swept wings that carried two tall tail rudders. Power came from a Mitsubishi Ha-43 engine of 2160 hp, enabling the Shinden to attain 466 mph and height of 40,000 ft- strong enough to attack the B-29s bombing Japan. It's armament was 4x 30mm Type 5 cannon in the nose! It also had narrow oblique air intakes, tricycle gear, and retractable wheels for the wing rudders. Expected production would be 150/mo for a start but this never happened as Japan surrendered. A jet version was also planned but remained in the design stage. More than a match for any Allied fighter.
