The WW2 German 280mm Krupp K5(E) guns were some of the largest and best railway guns ever. Two of them shelled the Anzio beachhead and became known as "Anzio Annie". They were in fact two guns- the Robert (Anzio Annie) and Leopold (Anzio Express) which were found partially wrecked in Italy on June 7, 1944. They were shipped back to the US and made into one gun- the Leopold which resides at the US Army Ordnance Museum in Maryland. One other K5 survives in France at the Battery Todt Museum. The K5 weighed 218 tons and fired a 283mm shell a distance of 40 miles (54 miles with rocket-assisted shells). It's barrel was 71 ft long! Several of these guns were installed in France to fire at British shipping in the Channel and were successful. Others were shipped to Italy. A total of 25 were built and two were bored-out to 310mm to fire the Peenemunde Arrow Shell out to 94 miles!!!
